Turbo options for 300

Hello

I was wondering if anyone out there who has tried, or thought of using the turbo off the early 80's Trans Am 301? O.E.M. quality and engine displacment are positive factors.

This engine got a bad reputation for wiping out the bottom end because G.M. tried to counteract detonation problems by sending the poor thing dead rich under boost, thus causing fuel to dilute the oil. Daily ( I'm not kidding) oil changes were necessary if you want that dumb set-up to survive in "drive it like you stole it" situations.

I like making things from scratch or modifying things so it works the way I want.

Thank you for any input

That turbo may be a bit too large for optimum performance on a 300. It's not just engine displacement that determines turbo size, it's displacement x max RPM. The bent 8 revved a whole lot higher than you're likely to ever take a 300. The somewhat smaller Pontiac V6 seems like a more appropriate turbo donor.

I agree with SR that the Buick 231 V-6 turbos are probably a better match for the 300, especially one of the later models from the 78-83 Buick Turbos. There is a terrific website devoted to these engines (including the Pontiac 301 Turbo - all their turbo technology was sourced from Buick) at http://home.flash.net/~rjgeorge/

Gentlemen;

Thank you for the input. The requirement is for low speed grunt, top engine speed would be 4500 r.p.m. at most.

Thanks again
