Well, looks like I may need a new head sooner than I thought. I had my car at the shop and turns out somehow one of the mechanics there cracked my stock log head. I'm not sure how much it would take to repair it... Thing is, I don't have that much money. So, as per my budget, and with a little help from my father (the mustang has been our project for the past 4, almost 5, years) we have to decide if it would be best to try for an OZ, go for a mod. log set up, or go all out for a AL... The other thing is, now i don't have a lot of time to think about it and i need to do this right. Any suggestions?

If it was cracked at the shop they should be paying for it not you. At the very least compensation for the stock head should be made

Apart from that realistically unless you do the machine work yourself you will be most of the way to an aluminum head if you mod a log head, or purchase an aussie head that needs rebuilding. Rather then go aussie I would just go aluminum as the aussie heads are still quite pricey and IMHO a $500 dollar difference between the two is not much realistically in the grand scheme of things

Yes, I agree. I made a very nice mod log head, but between the purchase price of the head (too much, don't ask), the hours I spent porting (plus cost of a die grinder and porting kit), and the cost of machine work and parts, I was already up over $1,000. For a little more I could have had an aluminum head which would have made much more power, taken 50# off the nose of my car, and had the potential for an upgrade to port fuel injection down the road.

By the way, how exactly does one go about cracking a piece of cast iron? It's likely it was already cracked and he just gave it a little extra nudge.

We are going to try to get, at the very least, the cost of the head.
The other thing is time, as this is my daily driver. How long on average does it take to get an AL head from CI? I know it says they need 6-8 weeks for porting and machining. Originally I was planning on going with the basic assembled head or the basic street head milled to 52cc...

I think you'd best call Mike to get an answer to that question. Not sure you'll really need porting done to that head on an otherwise stock engine. It flows substantially more than the one you are replacing.
