When did the Aussie motors switch from leaded gas to unleaded gas? At this point were different valves and seats used?
Dave

1987 was the year of total compliance. Many imported motors already ran hardened seats or inserts. The alloy heads AFAIK are all unleaded-capable.

I am unfamiliar with the term AFAIK. What I have is a carburated aluminum head cross flow engine, which I'm thinking came out some time in the early or mid 80's. I was going to install the engine and get all the fitment issues out of the way before I get into rebuilding it. Once all the conversion issues are out of the way I then can concentrate on going through the engine and trans. I am wanting to run this thing a while though but at the same time didn't want to cause any excessive wear.

I've run all of my alloy head engines on unleaded fuel. Mainly due to cost (ULP is roughly 3-5cpl cheaper than Super/LRP). I've also run LPG on alloy head engines, thrashed said engines, and I haven't had any valve burning out issues. Its the iron head engines you've gotta watch out for...

AFAIK = As Far As I Know

Guys,
I am using two alloy headed crossflows. One is a stromberg carbied 4.1 and an XE 4.1.
Both ping like blazes on the unleaded rubbish we must use.
Noel.

I had an EX EFI that also pinged badly. Turned out that the bushes on the dizzy were buggered as I recall.

were xe efi engines mechanical or electronic advance/curve, im pretty sure they were mechanical. Worn bushes can be a prob in these dissys, i had a second bush machined into the lower section this fixed it good

Yea, there's magic to be had in your distributer. There are many ponies to be unleashed in a well curved dizzy(as you call it). If their not quite right you get the pinging. Good distributer guys are hard to find but one of the first things I always do is getting my distributer curved. When done correctly you should know exactly where the advance is at every point in your RPM range. New computer technology has really helped in this regard. It's allowing us to run higher compresion ratios as well. If your having a pinging problems this is where I would look.

Thanks guys,
The pinging problem is most noted in the part throttle cruise area. Try the cruise at part throttle around 60/80 kph. Lower or faster speeds are not a problem.
It isnt really a problem as long as I can buy that lead replacement swill.
I really should look at it but the XD is my everyday car and has just logged 351,000 K,s.
Could be a carbon build up. Burns oil as well.
Spose I should get off my fat A's But probably wont.
Got othre things to do.
Noel.

I think you were right. They were mechanical.
And yes it was an XE not EX!

the ulp/super cylinder heads are the same, but pistons are different- huge dish on ulp pistons. also, if you're thinking about doing an efi conversion, get the ulp xf setup- it runs a knock sensor on the front rh head bolt. This allows them to run more advance and so make more power- about 10-15kw from memory. in regards to the advance, there is no advance mechanism in the distributor, it's all cotrolled by the computer,

More news guys.
Last weekend I replaced the blown cylinder head gasket on the XD and swapped the old cylinder head for one branded as /7 ( HD7 or something like that).
Does now run better and seems to be tolerating the unleaded petrol.
Thought I would try it after reading the responces from other on this forum.
So I will see how it goes.
Noel.
