V/SA Maverick - First Outing!!

Finally made it to the track for a few passes. I removed the bumpers and grille but not the supports/absorbers. Probably 120lbs lighter than its former legal weight. No weather station yet so can't really say what conditions were like - just cold and slight head wind. The car ran 16.38@80mph(2.17 60ft best). Need to find a full second and 4 or 5 mph.

The work begins.

15.80, your only +.600 !
What are you running for rear gear now and what is your trap rpm?
2.17 60 ft....she'll do better than that!
Cal tracs and 5.14 or lower gear will get her goin! Lol!!

Excellent, good luck!

Here's a run-down on the important stuff that I can confirm.

The body is a '74 2-door and will soon be a '72.
The engine has a Lunati cam and I am told just the usual Stock clean-up and no trick stuff; it does have adjustable rockers and Rhoads lifters.
C-4 trans with a BTE converter/8" and rev/manual body - Cheetah shifter
Hooker headers
Early Ford electronic distributor with MSD 6AL and 2-Step
Fuel cell, Holley "blue" pump
6pt Roll bar and frame connectors
Weld Draglites
8" rear w/mini spool and 4.62 gear
MT 26" slicks - no traction aids
Lakewood shocks f&r
Trunk mounted battery and weight box

At 22lb/hp the car will be no less than 2788 lbs incl driver(170)

I did some quick calculating and your only turning 4700+ rpm in the lights!
What do you shift at? Do you know where the hp peak is? I'm guessing it will pull hard to 5500 or so won't it? If so, you need a set of 5.38's or so so you go through the lights just before it noses over. (and it will pick up the 60ft too)
8" rear eh? hmmm, I don't know how low a gear you can get with them. If you switched to a 9" you would have unlimited gear choice..but with more weight and more importantly more parasitic drag. The old 9" isn't exactly friction free with the pinion so low on the ring. But if you can't get the gears you need, it would be worth the switch.

Thanks for taking up the cause "goinbroke"!!

I used the same shift light setting as the car's last runs in former owner's hands - 4600. The car actually tripped the line at 5100 and if I can remember, probably hit 4600 well before the first mph beam.
I've been considering a rear swap and the 8.8 may be interesting. Ratios are more available than the 8", less mass and it can handle the power for the next drivetrain.

Lol! I am just very interested because I was considering approx the same combo myself. Just curious how much work was required to get to the index. By the way, where does the motor "nose over" ? Obviously the 200 is under carbed and has a serious air flow problem with respect to the heads/intake. This is part of the reason I kinda swayed over towards a more underrated engine with more potential. (3.8 v-6) It's just that inliners are SO cool! Lol!!
The question though would be, where does it nose over and why? Would a longer duration help? or would you just lose more bottom end? Longer or shorter primary pipes? Different valve angles? A set of shubecks and 300# springs? Class racing basically comes down to what engine can put out the most hp/lb which usually consists of RPM and lots of it. Engines that naturaly breath well are favored (chebby) Aftermarket rods/pistons/lifters/springs/etc means you have engines turning 8000 in the lights. Vic Guilmero runs a 429 mustang and spins it to 8200! I almost sh@# when he told me that! D/SA 71 mustang 429, reving like a small block! wow!
Oops...did I get off track here? Lol!

Anyway, please keep the info coming, who knows, I may build a similar combo after I finish working on the bronco, mustang bracket car, kids go carts, etc.

.......so?.....well?.......update time!

What do you mean I'm impatient?

Tracks still open up there? Everything has been shut down here for a while now. (damn snow) Last weekend Nova Scotia had a good storm and most of the province was out of power for 3-6 days.

......how long till spring?.....crap........

Totally off topic, but a buddy a few years back had a V/SA Pinto, a guy asked him if he was sponsered by Visa since it was on his window.
I still laugh about that.
