valve spring retainers again

Hi, new guy here. Been lurking and searching for a while.

I have a '79 zephyr head at the machinist's at the moment. I got the 66-68 valve springs but am confused as to the V6 retainer. I think they looked up the numbers for a 4.0 '90-'00 truck or bronco. Is that right?

The part shop has both intake@$1.22 and exhaust@$2.57. What's the difference and what should I get? I've done some searches here for specifics and have a Ford part number E6TZ 64536-A but can someone elucidate?

I've ordered the 264/274 cam and the timing chain from Mike.

The car is a '78 Fairmont wagon with 65,000 miles.

Another question- is the port divider a no-brainer? One guy mentioned they come oversized and he had to spend 4 hours grinding to get it to fit. Is that par for the course? It seems like a good machinist might be able to weld something else in with similar results. Any thoughts on that?

Oh, and thanks for helping me waste so much of my time and money!

You ain't wasted anything yet, newbie. You're just gettin' started! :D

The port divider has ridges cast into it and since the heads vary from cating to casting, a close fit is time consuming. I have seen steel plate welded into a "T" to accomplish the same thing.

don´t get confused for intake or exhaust applications on the retainers, that doesn´t matter for our 170-200-250 sixes.

I´ve ordered E6TZ-6A536-A for a mid-90´s 4.0 V6 Explorer/ Aerostar/ Ranger:

Thanks, a picture is worth...
And the right part number should help!

I am confused by the difference in price if the ins and outs are the same part. If it matters not to our engines, then I will get the intake retainers.
