Valve Stem Seals

I need to replace the valve stem seals on my '66 200. I have not yet removed the valve cover so I have not yet even seen what they look like. I have never done this before. I also don't have a service manual.

So, how difficult will this be? Any tips? Seems to me this should be pretty straight forward. Remove the rocker, compressed air into the cylinder (to hold the valve up), valve spring compressor, remove the spring, remove the seal, install new seal, put the vale spring back in, done. Right?

Need to know how to reset the rocker for proper clearance. Any advice, links, would be appreciated.

Im gunna be doin the same thing as you accept im going to remove the head and replace the gasket. I can use the help as well.

Well, you will want to run the piston all the way up in the bore as you do each cylinder just in case one does slip (you might be able to save it) Just don't get the pressure too high so that it forces the piston down.

A good extendable magnet is a lifesaver to grab the locks as they come loose. A little hammer and a punch may also be needed to knock the locks loose. They often tend to stick evern after the spring is compressed.

As for setting the rockers - your '66 should have a non-adustable setup. Just bolt them back on evenly with 30-35lbs of torque,

Thanks for the info John.

I also have heard of another method for holding the valves up. You feed some cord into the cylinder through the sprkplug hole and run the piston up to jamb the valve up with the cord. This way, there's no air pressure to push the pston down.

hey howcome my post was deleted ? I posted some things in here to us I66 and now I dont see the post. Funny thing is, I also tried to come here earlier today but it said page cannot be found, I jus tried logging in a minute ago but it said I was inactive or entered wrong password etc, I wonder why this is happening.

Anyways, I tried to state some straight forward tips but apparently it was deleted by someone or some thing. : \

I replaced my seals the first time with the "rope" method: bring the piston to the top of the stroke, then slide some nylon rope into the sparkplug hole. I got about 1 foot in each time. This helps hold the valves up. Even if the valve falls in, the top of the piston is close, so it won't go very far.

The worst part is leaning 'way over the fender all the time. Makes your back feel old. :?

you can do it with an airhose too...I just had someone do it for me...because i am in an apartment

I have seen my head off many times recently and realize it is not too hard to take one off...
