Valves sound too loud, any thoughts on what could cause it?

Hello All,

We just restored a 1965, straight six and the valves seem to be making too much noise. We adjusted them to within spec but seem to be too loud. They all sound uniform, where as before there we're a few way out of whack. Since the car has only 33,000 original miles on it we only rebuilt the head. I know this could be a thousand different things but any thoughts on a few particuliar to this motor?

Thanks for any insight

too strong springs?

bad lifters (thats what mine has)

I am guessing

The spec in the book tells us to leave a larger gap than what seems normal for hydraulic lifters. It sounds like a loud typewriter. The springs and the lifters are original with only 33k on the car. Not sure, probably going to take it to a mechanic.

Hi Stanger,

If you have hydraulic lifters there should be no gap (zero lash). To accomplish this you can tighten the rocker arm until you can't turn the push rod with your fingers and then tighten the adjustment screw another 1/2 turn. Should quite thing down for you. Buy the way, it helps to pull all the plugs and turn the engine over with the starter until you see the oil pressure gage start to move BEFORE you start the adjustment process. This will insure that the lifters are pumped up when you adjust the valves.
