Water Pump Issues

Hello, all.

Once again, I am in need of the collective help of everyone here. And, once again, I probably won't express my thanks as much as I would like, but, thank you all, in advance.

As a quick recap, I have an Aussie Ford Falcon XA, with an Aussie 250 ci 6 in it. The catch is that I'm in the U.S.

Anyhow, I have my water pump out, now, since I got bored waiting for my timing set to get here from Oz. In any case, I noticed that the.. errr.. metal "plate" in between the impeller and the actual water pump housing is starting to crack through. I was a bit bummed because now I've got to take the who shebang apart. I guess it wouldn't of mattered, anyhow, since there appears to be a gasket between the housing and the "plate" anyhow. (What's strange is that this water pump doesn't exactly look like the one in my XA factory manual.. it looks a little different, and my manual didn't show this "plate" at all... in any case...)

So, firstly, can I get a new one of these "plates" here in the States, or do I have to order from Down Under, again? Also, my book says that I should replace the bearings, etc., if I take this sucker apart, so, the same question there.. can I get it from the States, or do I have to order from Oz/NZ? Anything else I should be considering here?

Thanks a million, way in advance.

Makoto

Go to any Discokin6's post by looking through the Aussie Forum files. The search engine only goes back to November 2003. Anyway, he posted info on the brands of water pumps made in Tiwan, India or Japan, and good ol Australia. I'm not sure how different the x-flow ones are to your log head six, but I'd say they are little different.

I found it on page 7 of 9 pages of about 591 Discokin6 posts. Do I get a doggie biscuit? :P

As Jack said in his Crossflow Chronicles, they are a non servicable item, but i guess a smart American could do so if he wanted to.

If you want one, I've got a used one here. Aussies are closer, and possibly have the right stuff. It should take only 7 days to get it air freighted unless it ticks and has white powder on it.

Anyone else know if these non-servicable items are reworkable without the impellor tab coming off?

It'd be serviceable if you had the inclination. Bearings and seals would be out of a standard catalogue. That's a crossflow type pump, but it is a slightly superior design. You use two gaskets to sandwich the plate; nothing tricky.

Ok, so, since the design is for a Crossflow engine, the plate is going to be an Oz only product, but the bearings, impeller, etc., should be from a U.S. pump?

It seems that once you pull the pump off the engine, you'd at least have to take the impeller off since there's no other way to get to the gasket between the pate and the pump housing.. am I right?

I can't remember 100%, but seem to recall "fiddling" a new gasket in there. You could probably just use a US pump for an AC-equipped car if you wanted.
