Another "strike". 
Had a chance today, to talk cars with an old wrecker mate who's seen and tried lots of stuff.
He tells me, the XE/XF diff hat won't fit earlier housings. Apparently the drillings are not quite the same and four or five bolts are not aligned.
I'm slightly disappointed to discover this, as it had seemed like a good swap in for when the moment demanded it.
As with the transmission thoughts, I will have to take a camera without flat battery next time!
