All Small Six weber 32/36 problems

This relates to all small sixes

Little 200

Have had 32/36 on 200 for a few months but after having head checked and supposedly new guides and seals in but has always smoked on start up . So i take head to an older man that builds engines and he puts new brass guides / new valves /locks/positive seals. After reinstalling it is bellowing a fuel smoke but when the fuel /air screw is turned all way in it does not affect the idle at all it keeps on running even after idling for a few minutes . Any thought ?

Maybe you have similar saga as I did. After it all, i had the PCV hooked up wrong and running super rich

"Thoughts?"
1) yes, may B 2, 3 things confounded together here. + Leave head on when having inspection, prob diagnosis,
2) I'm not sure abt a weber - @ least 1 model U must leave "to open air" for curcits to cycle (assure PCV routing as its different
4 this unknown to me model),
3) U may have IDed wrong screw on carb,
4) fuel rich carb adj & blow-by R different conditions.

Diagnosis is difficult, more so remotely, near impossible on line. We do so, tho & successfully. Let's go thru it in an organized fashion. A fella here asked abt 'best fan' or where to find 1 (I 4get) and after 3 pages, 50 posts, we found it was an 'over heat' solved w/thermostat change. Same, a coolant system, guy phriques "My needle runs so very hi, I fear over heat'. Pages later - it never puked coolant out, never over heated, just a wary driver. Its OK if many pages R due to right Qs, organized, and prob solved. 8^ )

When you say that it has always smoked on startup, what color smoke?

If it was black, then it was running rich, but it's supposed to run a richer when it's cold and the choke is closed.

Can you open the choke some and see if the engine keeps running and the smoke goes away?

Does it stop smoking once it's warm?

3-5 is its's need? Thats our mechanical's range too

Float setting notes
1. Fuel pressure is critical to float spillage.
Redline recommends 2.5 to 3 lbs.

  • Weber Carburetors require 2.5 p.s.i. of Fuel pressure. If your fuel pressure is more than 2.5 p.s.i, obtain a Fuel Pressure Regulator from your Weber Dealer.

When i bought the carb from Vintage Inlines i also got an electric fuel pump to go with carb so i took for granted that it was at wright pressure . The one thing i found out that the throttle linkage had the throttle opened some could this be some or all of the problem of rich mixture ? Thanks everyone for all your advise .

Doctor C where did you have it hooked to that caused it to run rich ?
Sorry for the late reply. The 2 things were independent of eachother. After fixing the PCV hookup I installed an O2 and found i was running super rich and that was the "smoke" I had coming out the tailpipe.

Confused more? Or less =)

"found out that the throttle linkage had the throttle opened some could this be some or all of the problem of rich mixture ?"

... you may be on to a something, IF the 32/36 primary barrel throttle plate is open 'some'. the carb would be adding primary main jet fuel and idle jet and mix screw wouldn't affect it much. Making sure throttle plates are at idle is the start.

.

... fuel pressure regulator is a good idea, check fuel delivery specs of your specific fuel pump.

maybe try to talk to the :
"older man that builds engines"

( "it is bellowing a fuel smoke"... if the smoking is caused by internal engine problems, no better tuning or substitute carb will fix it )

32/36 on a small block six is good setup once tuned. I run a 32/36 - H/W 5200 on a small six for over 10 years with great drivability -( No FP regulator on OEM mechanical pump. )

.

havev fun
