Been a long time gone. Dropped a dummy 300 in my '80 Mustang. (this is related to small block) Started to wrestle with the pan clearance problems and mounts--then had hand surgery and I'm about useless. No longer in the mood to solve problems or tug on big pieces of cast iron. Sold the 300 parts.

So...the 200 is going back in after a performance rebuild. I'll be scouring old posts for information on pistons and cams. Head milling. Has anyone had the integral manifold/head Extrudehoned? Little higher stall on the C4. Nice round town car.

Just back in the group, with a slightly different goal.

Sorry about your misfortune. Hope this year goes better for you from this point on. I lost 2 of my 3 Mustangs so far this year so I do understand the frustration.

I would like to hear your thoughts on the 300 in the 80 Stang such as fit and length problems.

I dont know of anyone who has extrude honed the log head.
 
Biggest problem appears to be interference between the pan (right at the oil pump) and the steering rack/crossmember. Length is OK.

With the pan resting on the rack, it sits too high. As near as I can tell, there's not enough room to hack the pan up. It's right where the oil pump goes. I toyed with lowering the rack--but that just worsens the steering problems since I have short springs--I should be lifting the rack. Tube K-member doesn't seem to be the answer. I know I could figure out a way to do it. But, since this is just an "around town" car, I plan to do some tweeks to the 200 and put it back.

I've also got a '34 Hudson coupe street rod I'm neglecting and I've been active promoting biodiesel in the area. Add to that my duties as Mayor of the City of Lacey... Whew! Just too much going on.

66Monterey, it's a rear sump pan. I think I'd have to drop the rack and maybe go to a tubular K-member. In addition, I'd have to drop the connection to the steering arm to keep the geometry in the ballpark. I've seen bolt-like extensions to lower the rack attachment to the steering arm, but I've never like the engineering involved.

weeds, how the heck did they recognize me? Musta been the "hizoner" license plate. ;-)

Quick question.

What did the 300 I6 come out of that it had a rear sump pan?

I have considered the 80 Mustang with 300 I6 and can get a 300 I6 real cheap.
 
I think the rear sump 300 came out of a van. It was already out when I found it.
 
A front sump won't work either. It's the "non-sump" part in the oil pump region that is in conflict. A front sump would hit steering rack, k-member and anti-roll bar. It could be made to work, but I've decided to go the OZ 2V route.
