what are the signs of blow by

i always thought that white smoke in the exhaust was the only indication but on my 170 there is no smoke in the exhaust but alot coming from the crank vent port where the road draft tube go's and it burns about a quart every 2 weeks i want to recirculate the oil somehow to save myself trips to auto zone also i use quaker state Q 20w 50 high rpm what oils do you guys use

Smoke out the breather is a sign of blow by. Its basically exhaust gas getting past the piston rings and looking for a way out. On its way out it brings extra heat and contaminants which is part of where your oil is going. You dont see it as soon on newer cars because of the PCV system sucks it back into the system up to a point. I saw your other post where you said you got around 100psi on a compression test. Thats on the low side, your motor is just worn out. Time for a rebuild or find another engine. A good fresh engine is going to be over 150. 120 is getting down there but I have heard people say they still run good. You start getting in the 75 range and it wont run anymore. Its also one of those things that is likely to get worse fairly quickly.

8) no, cooler operating temps will actually accelerate wear. however running a thicker oil, like a 20w50 or adding a can of stp should help.

I have to disagree...i have a 68 pontiac 400 that has 25psi each cylinder...blown head gaskets and everything else, and it still hauls ass.

yeah my grandpa of an engine runs very well it never misfires i am able to bark the tires while rolling and was able to do wicked burnouts before my clutch burned out still drives good but it smokes soooo much from the cvp :x
