hello ford people.
i am actually a Mercedes Tech for 20 years now. but cut my teeth on early 80s American cars. I have been wanting a project to share with my 13 year old son.
his grandfather was shop Foreman for ford dealerships in Houston from the 60s through till 90s when he passed. My kid loves working with me and even more so on something paw paw used to work on. I found a really straight 79 Granada only 66000 miles. limped home. now it bogs and won't make it out of the drive way. hoping some of you guys can help us get this survivor on the road again.

Welcome to the Fordsix forum.
Which engine does your Granada have?

welcome to the seriously - simpler world of Ford vs Mercedes . Granada can be considered the last evolution of the Ford Falcon, mostly same mechanicals' with the Darwin advantage. 250 probably is mated to the C4 auto' although 3OTT and maybe 4OTF were actually available.
.
Tranny - Discs - PS - AC - ? ?
.
there's plenty room under long hood, start with a simple compression test to make sure youre' not PITW. At 66K miles that 250 should still be fresh.
.
by '79 could have a clogged Cat converter
.
250 / C4 can perform well once even close to 'in tune' , with some imagination the anvil strong 250 has more to offer ...
.
have fun

my '61 250 Comet - '74 250 Maverick - 60 190D

om621 will get you where you need to go. last forever. just keep up with the fuel hoses. pretty sure i have a c4 trans. with ps and a/c, all the emissions are there and appear hooked up to vacuums. the air cleaner is smashed and has no filter. but i figure it should still motor around the parking lot with out the air cleaner attached. the Cat may be plugged. black soot is all over the ground where I've been revving it up trying to blow things out a bit. also i only have a spacer under the carb. previous guy had it set up that way. I'm not sure that's right either. i pulled the carb up and only a sliver of paper was on the egr spacer. non on the carb side

first thing id do would be cut the cat off, my 83 had a newer cat put on by the previous owner that was majorly sludged.
The cat is coming off regardless. and that's a good reason it will quit after running a few min. choking on its own exhaust. I really need to get a vacuum gauge on it.

Lack of response. I will just get some gasket paper and trial and error hope I get some power back. I've shipped for gaskets and only see a gel pro. But when I shop carbs I see they come with three different size gaskets. Thanks for help guys .

Sprinterboyz- welcome! The most reliable place to get carburetor rebuild kits or other specific parts is here. These carbs are very simple, an overhaul is good peace of mind. Also replace the fuel filter. The car's done a lot of sitting, tanks get dirty over time.
It is very rewarding to have a hobby with your children- (y)

Yup. Cat was plugged. I can get out of the parking lot. Actually drove twenty miles. Still stumbles off idle. But I'm sure the plugs are fouled some. And will need to adjust carb and timing. But for 50 herspers it's not too bad.

Hi, look at the basic things during the compression test. I would change all the normal tuneup items at the same time. Plugs, cap, rotor, wires, and filters. These engines like advanced timing, @ 10-12* BTDC, and check the vacuum advance. Good luck
