What oil in Accel Super Coil ?

I recently purchased a Accel Super Coil off ebay and noticed it had leaked some oil in the box. Can anyone tell me what would do the job as after taking the top off there is almost none in it. It smells very similar to Penrite hypoid diff oil. It has a dark honey like color and is quite a thick viscosity.
Thanks Dan

:D Hi Dan.I don`t think that coils are supposed to come apart. If the top came off of yours,WELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL,I think that you need a new coil.If I`m wrong, someone please correct me.

Hi Leo It actually has 4 screws that hold it all together and comes apart easy. I have used some hypoid all in it for now. It had been tampered with prior to me getting it and had a cross threaded screw on the ht output but is now sparking.
Cheers

I reckon there is something suspicious about a coil that has a) leaked oil and b) been tampered with. I would have the coil hot tested to make sure it does not break down when it gets hot....

Hullo,
Usually if a coil leaks oil, it will leak spark/short out. Mainly under load.
Probably wont be able to save this unit.
Suggest buy another one.

I used a coil tester to test how far my original coil sparked and it would jump around a 10mm gap before that pot started to missfire, with the dodgey Accel unit fitted it went to around 15mm and was still firing before it bit me. I have as a precaution left the old one in place so it will be a quick changeover should it fail.
Cheers Dan

Maybe the previous owner of the coil pulled it apart to "just have a look". Sounds to me like all the proper tests have been done and the coil will be reliable!

:D Hi all.Never realised that coils were able to be disassembled. Was this for user servicing,or just the way the coils were built?

usually coils are filled with transformer oil, probably naphtenic mineral-based or fluorinated hydrocarbon-based.

I stopped tinkering with old leaky coils when I learned PCB was used until the late 60s in the US.

i had exactly the same problem.i was working on my car late at night i think it was about 11pm when i finished.i went to bed and when i woke up in the morning i had left the ignition on and it had blown the gasket out on my accel super coil.anyway being out of town and on a property i simply topped it up with black and gold motor oil of all things and sealed the top back up with black engine gasket and guess what???12 years latter the coil is still runing my car!!!i dont know if i could recomend what i done but its a true story and its still powering on.
