wondering about the Megasquirt

i'll be building a 351W soon and was planning on fuel injection, then i actually looked at some conversion kits, holy crud they're expensive, since then i've been looking into other ways of getting fuel injection on the V8, i could prolly get most of the stuff from a 'yard, but then i thought about the computer and the fact that i don't really want a stock one because i'd like to be able to tune it, and i was wondering how hard the Megasquirt is to make and use, anyone had any experience with it?

yes i realize that it isn't an I6, but this forum is pretty much the only one i've been able to find with the most info, but without any of the posturing and posing that most V8 owners and forums have (at least the ones i've found so far)

don't worry, the I6 will stay with me and be used
"we can rebuild it, we can make it stronger, faster..."

You can tune most stock v8 ecu's, especially if you get one from a rustang. Check google for EEC Tuner and similar devices and you'll see what I mean. It may cost a bit more, but I wouldn't suggest going with something like the megasquirt unless you are somewhat of a geek :)

How many people here are geeks!?...anyone who posts outragoues dreams of unthinkable possibilities on an inline 6 has got to have a geeky side to them, :rolflmao:

I actually plan on using the megasquirt becasue i like the idea of tuning it up with using a turbo. Mkaes things easier than dealing with a stock computer i think. And i get to learn about electronics a little more...

Were all geeks n some way or another, maybe not as computer geeky as some, but we know our stuff about the inlines hehe

i think that the things that got me considering it were the DIY side (aka cheaper), the adaptability of it, and then (once the thing is put together) the simplicity of it, they make it sound army-proof, but of course that could just be the advertising

anyone notice the startling similarity of this board to that one and the occasional "mustangsix" post? Coincidence.........?

My 2 cents on this- just 'cause its a V8 don't make it cheaper! :D Just ask Ted. His 351W is turning out to be almost as exspensive as his BB6 would have. My FE is probably more exspensive than the 300 I had planned for, too. Of course if you're not gonna do any major mods, it will be fairly cheap. But don't forget to factor everything in cost wise. I love V8's, but unless you're after BIG power, inject the 6!

Sorry, someone was gonna say it sooner or later- its a 6 site!

I'm thinking about trying the Megasquirt . I know nothing about the physics or whatever about injection. But like mentioned; It does sound like it can adapt any system to any motor. I'm sure tired of #$%@ing with that Holly/Carter/Stromberg or whatever you want to call it.

Later stock EFI intake with the split exhaust has got to be a great improvement over the old carb manifolds.

Think Mgasquirt is too good to be true ?????????

Are there different 4.9 EFI set ups between years ?????

If so, what year is better ???????

I think a computer is a computer. If it has the components to be one, plus be versatile in the sense of programming it, then go for it. But you do have to have some sense of knoledge putting the thing together.

Thats kinda thew limitation on stock OEM computers. You dont know how to program it unless you know how it works. The megasquirt you put together yourslef, and it is programmable by the user.

The 96 EFI 300 is OBD II. I believe all the rest are the same pretty much...But the EFi lower intake is much less restrictive nadhas better airflow than the carbed ones. As well as the exhaust manifolds.

The advantage that Megasquirt offers is the quantity of sensors and outputs. It reads only what is pertinent to engine function and ignores the rest of the car.

Bah, a GM ECM is the trick.... Have to be a real geek to tune one tho... If you guys were to research the megasquirt project, you'd hit DIY EFI, and land squarely on the GM ECM page.... GM sensors, PCM's(I've got a pile of the dang things), everything are CHEAP......
