hey guys

you guys will find this funny the other day i bought a ford xf and it had nice mags and that on it and only small problems here and there over her like faded bonnet and 2 little rust bubbles on the car. so i purchases the car knowing it had a bad first gear thinking ill drive here home off second in auto tipical me a 17yr old kid but funny enought i discovered the car won't drive fowards in ANY gear but she will reverse but will stall without revs strait after putting it into reverse. Well the car moves slighterly foward when in drive but it just dosen't seem to grip like a manual when u still holding the clutch out and the clutch and flywheel the rub eachout softerly and barly move. what would be causing this problem someone meantion something about belts in the gear box or something. i should meantion this is the first car with auto that i have't stuffed. lol guttless mazda and mistabishi and there over priced gearboxes LMAO.

my plans with this car is to have a project car where im going to mask her up properly and take all rubbers off and paint her all right then pull her motor right down so im holding a clean piston or crank shaft in my hand. and put some extra and better thing in the motor while i but her back together then put new fat tyre on the car and take her out for show ow yer also ill put her back on gas for when im just driving around and if i ever find some cocky commodor drive flick her over to fuel just for see him disappear in the rear view mirror. She would look like any drag car but lets say she my sleeper LOL

well hope you can help me with my car and all so id like a few idea to try on my XF.

Welcome. Just typical Borg Warner Auto prolems, Ford Thunder!

The gearbox is under sized for the grunt of any engine above about 221 cubes.

First, Ford Australian are specific in maintenace requirement of new fluid every 15 000 km in good terrain, more if hilly. That never, ever gets done like that becasue owners are unaware of the requirements, even though they are in the service book.

Second, the kickdown cable looks simple, but is in fact very, very complicated, and works like the throttle valve on Chevy 350 THM transmissions. Get it adjusted wrong, and it starts to roll out thump as you come into intersectiosn, dropping into first savagely. Keep on like that, and it loses the ability to down change, and then and it'll stuff the gearbox. Reverse is normally first to drop off, then the forward gears go on holiday.

Third, the clutch pack is too small, and Ford changed it only with the last EA Falcon gearbox. The main bearings are low grade, not toringnton rollers, and they are not even a quarter of the quality of any C4 gearbox which was an option from 1968 to 1980 on all six cylinder Falcons.

When set up to spec and serviced, the BW 40 will take all the EFI's power, and be a great, smooth transmision. With the EA clutch plates, it is a very strong box, able to take as much power as a stock 4.9 liter. The last SVO EA Falcons by Mick Webb used the BW 51 box, a varaint of the BW40, and it could take 139 kw and 345 Nm easily. However, the 5 year annual cost of 7 litres of oil and throttle kickdown adjustment, and all that drama will pay for a new four speed auto gearbox, and I have openly stated that Ford Australia were foolish not to pick up the US four stage auto used on V8 Mercury, Lincolns and LTD's since October 1979 to late 1992.

Your road to Fairmont Ghia utopia is expensive, and you must decide on what level of streetability you want. The 1550 kilos of XF needs a proper, modern gearbox, and needs a perfect match of cam, EFI, and compression, diff ratios, and exhast.

Any Commodore, 4.2, 5.0, or 5.7 litre V8 is able to use any combination of parts, and still kick a 4.1 Falcons ass. Anyone who thinks a midly modified Falcon 4.1 will be street king is deluded. The Holdens are, year for year, 150 to 100 kilos lighter, have less air drag, and have better gearing and more aftermarket go faster stuff than our Falcons. Your never going to take one out unless you do the same sort of things Ford did with the Falcon XR6 in 1992. They had head, exhast, engine management, gearbox, diff and suspesion changes which were a step up from the EA SVO, and light years ahead of any XF.

If you to peck the Lions, you gotta Fly with the Eagles and get all the components sorted out.

My suggestion is to look at the costs of just getting all the others service items done. Get a spare BW 40 from a wreckers, and bolt it up to get it mobile.

You have to prioriise enough money for fixing

the collapsable Cortina seat back ratchet all Ford XF's used. (Its dangerous, and nasty).
The seat belts have to be checked out. They are often crap.
The power steeering needs a roller top conversion kit, and a rebuild,
new crome door handles (black ones wear out),
new hinge kits and inserts for the four doors, upgrade the metal in the lower front doors,
go through all the power door locks (if fitted),
renew window wiper mechinsim
the A and C pillar rust.
Check that the tie rod ends,
front strut rod rubbers,
ball joints,
idler and pitman arms need to be the best avaialble.
Radiator and heater core need to be all new.
the Air conditioning needs to be rebuilt with the new refrigerant.

Once that's been done, you can start on doing the engine, gearbox and diff, exhast, cam, compression, and engiine management systems.

The engine is the easy bit. you can just go xH or XG OHC 4.0 Multi point, or totally rebuild the 4.1 The later modle EFI can be made to work on the OHV X-FLOW. If you don't want to turbocharge
spend the 8 grand you'll need to safetly add a turbo without blowng up the 4.1 EFI engine, then you'll have to copy a later Ford OHC 6 you like, and harvest the right cam, compression, gearing and exhast.

There are poeple who add turbos to there XE and XF's, and do a great job of making pure drag cars, or part street'n'strippers. LP Gas isn't a problem, as you can forget about needing 500 to 1500 bucks worth of EFI equipement, and just turn to a cheap and reliable Impco set-up.

I really like the old XF. I have a Fairmont EFI wagon, 1987, and its a buzz to drive. But you have to have enough budget set asside, and itemise all the bits before you go ahead.

i think id supercharge her i hate turbo's everyone runs them u see them here there here there it just become such a over use esentual item. i was thinking of droping a T5 manual in there but just wanted to get her up and running on the auto gearbox so i can stuff it up like the rest LMAO i not just going to put small gear in my XF im going to the point where ill proberly crack my head from the preasure LMAO

i was going to spend $2000 min easy on new gear for the motor
then get sport flywheel and heavy duty clutch for then i tow a few mates car on the car trailer and my my cruelty to the pore gearbox and engines
don't worry when i get her on the road ill scare my self into realalty again LOL.

i was going to do simple stuff like
sport crank shaft
larger pistons (over bore pistons then put sleave in so stronger)
wild cam if the little motor and run smooth or just a mild cam
new lifters
titanium valves
sport injectors
cold air induction
supercharger
new fat tyres
rockers
302 gearbox

i know im forgetting many things here!!!

Ow yer also ill get the computer reprogramed for all the addons and i thinking about buying one so all i have to do is pull it out of box to improve performance with new item on car or if a mate changes his injector just make it easyer to save money for other itme on the car.

if you got any better idea on that i could do to the car to improve it plz mention it while you telling me how to fix the auto tran.

In the morning im going to try the belts and see if i can get it to work again. It will give me a gear box to test the motor on while working it.
