New Engine Build

Thanks guys!

It was fun and I figured I would post my times. The last 2 passes I was shifting around 5500 rpms and wasnt beating on it real hard.

The 1st 3 passes I was granny shifting it. :D

60' 2.47 1/8th 9.88 @ 74.66 1/4 mile 15.24 @ 91.01
60' 2.22 1/8th 9.58 @ 74.05 1/4 mile 15.00 @ 89.73
60' 2.30 1/8th 9.55 @ 75.53 1/4 mile 14.89 @ 91.24

60' 2.23 1/8th 9.42 @ 75.66 1/4 mile 14.72 @ 92.12
60' 2.23 1/8th 9.41 @ 75.91 1/4 mile 14.68 @ 92.31

I just got done talking to Faron (real nice guy to talk to!) and he's in the process of recurving my distributor so I'm looking forward to stabbing that in and going back on May 10th-11th to race at the Thunder Nationals at US 131 Motorsports Park. I also signed up for points so I plan on racing a lot this year again!

Later,

Good times for first road test.

Just for a compar-O, my 62 Falcon with a milder 200 engine, C4 , 4.11 gear, 500cfm Holley on log head:

My recent 15.44 run, 85 mph

60 foot : 2.1235
1/8: 9.765 - 69.58 mph
1/4 mile 15.44 - 85.83

Doug, my only concern is the distributor driven gear that came with the Duraspark distributor.
The remans usually just glass bead the original gear.
Its probably too late but i sell a hardened & nitrated driven gear for the Duraspark.
Since you have run the distributor, check the gear for any signs of scoring. If it shows signs of scoring the camshaft drive gear is the next victum.
My gears are close to 40-50 in hardness on the rockwell C scale. The stock gear is about 27 C rockwell hardness.
If it looks ok proceed. Bill
PM me if you need a gear.

Thanks guys! :D

Thanks for the offer Bill, but any of the stock Ford distributers I've ever ran never had the problem with the gears. I'll keep checking mine from time to time though.

I'll let you know if I need one! :)

Faron finished recurving mine (THANKS!) so I'll be installing it in a few days and will have it ready for the May 10-11 race. Looking forward to trying it out.

Doug

Got the new recurved distributor back from Faron and was able to go to a test and tune Friday night. MPH is up but times are slower and I know my convertor is going bad. I have a new 3000-3300 stall convertor that i'm installing this Saturday so I plan on going to another test and tune next Friday night.

Heres my times. This is with my timing set @ 16 btdc.

60' 2.37 1/8 mile 9.65 @ 76.17 1/4 mile 14.84 @ 94.01
60' 2.41 1/8 mile 9.70 @ 75.92 1/4 mile 14.92 @ 93.45

Bumped timing ahead to 18 degrees btdc.

60' 2.46 1/8 mile 9.82 @ 75.15 1/4 mile 15.10 @ 92.49

Pulled timing back to 14 btdc.

60' 2.27 1/8 mile 9.54 @ 75.90 1/4 mile 14.79 @ 93.12
60' 2.20 1/8 mile 9.55 @ 74.78 1/4 mile 14.86 @ 91.94.

It idles and drives great and seems to pull hard mid range to upper rpms's The engine has 400+ miles on it now so I upped my shift points to 6000 rpms.

well MPH , = Power , and you already know the converter is Bad , I believe it will fly with that fixed , what was the air temps and humidity ? BIG items that can make up to a 1/2 sec and 3-5 mph from good to bad , looking forward to the New Converter Posts !

Air temp was mid 70's both times but I dont know what the humidity was? I have a friend that goes to the track that has a weather station but he wasnt there either time.

I unpacked the converter today and its from Precision Converters of Ohio and its called a "beefy boy" converter and says 3000-3300 stall. Its a 10" converter.

Looking forward to getting it installed!

Thanks,

Doug

Any Updates ?

Bad Luck all around last couple of weeks...

The new torque converter isnt built right. It would only foot brake to 2000 rpms and I could shock it to 2200 rpms. Ripped it back out and sent it back to the company to see what they could do to fix it.

Slowest time was a 15.48 and the fastest was a 14.99.

Another problem is I wore out my ET streets last fall so I'm running a set of BFG radial TA's for right now. MASSIVE wheel hop. The 1st time it hopped so hard (in the burnout box) my glove box door flew open and all my crap fell out onto the freakin floor!

2nd time it hopped even harder yet and the motor shut off! :banghead:

Best thing that happened at that test & tune is I found a Long John Silvers that I can drive my truck & car trailer through the drive thru so I dont have to get out of my truck to get a bite to eat on the way home.

Trying to fix the wheel hop problem right now. Set the rear shocks 2 clicks stiffer, lowered tire pressure 4 lbs, removed the spring clamps off the rear of the springs and made some new spring clamps for the front of the springs and have them bolted down tight. It seems to help on the street but we'll see what happens at the track. Also can shim up the snubbers closer to the spring if I need to. Running slapper bars right now. Everyone is excited about Cal-Tracs on the various forums, but I'm more excited about getting my stall converter to stall.....

Brakes took a crap last weekend so I replaced all the brake shoes front and back and put new adjuster kits in the front. Thats fine now.

Played with the timing a bit. I have to PM you one of these days because I have a couple of questions to ask.

Going back to a test & tune Friday night with the old converter so I can play with the timing a bit more, adjust the secondaries and see if my wheel hopping problem is solved. Also fixed my electric water pump drive so I can run that friday night too.

Planning on ripping the front cover off the motor monday and advance the cam 4 degrees being its straight up.

Thats whats going on right now.

Oh I did buff it all out and waxed it last weekend because I'm going to a car show Saturday with it. :)

Later,

Doug

Wow (y)
Grrreeeaat! Looks hot, and runs awesome. Hpe that new converter works properly this time. Have a fun season!

Thanks guys! :D

Converter place called today and my converter will arrive at my CarQuest store tomorrow on UPS. I have to call them in the morning so he can explain what he (they) did to fix it.

So it looks like I'll be swapping converters on monday instead and see what happens next weekend. I'll post my newest times tomorrow night when I get back. I miss my 1.90 somthing 60' times really really bad...

Hard to find a good drive thru pulling a car trailer!

Doug

Actually if the converter has the best ( correct and optimized ) stall speed , it wont help , AND it will actually slow down , I'd advise against it UNTIL you have tested JUST the converter swap , no sense in killing a few top end pony's

New converter is in!

Bring it up to about 2200 rpms to clean it out and I can shock it to 3500 rpms!

Its a totally differant ride now!

If it launches as good at the track as it does on the street I'll leave the cam alone now.

I'll post my friday night times with the old converter but the best time was a 14.94 @ 91 IIRC.

BTW, Wheel hop problem is gone.

Later,

Doug

Best times Friday night with the old convertor.

60' 2.32 1/8 mile 9.76 @ 74.61 1/4 mile 15.10 @ 91.10
60' 2.22 1/8 mile 9.56 @ 73.99 1/4 mile 14.94 @ 90.68

Later,

Doug

I was able to make a bunch of passes last night and am quite plaeased with the results so far.

Baseline passes off the trailer.

60' 2.07 1/8 mile 9.31 @ 75.16 1/4 mile 14.65 @ 91.39
60' 2.06 1/8 mile 9.30 @ 75.29 1/4 mile 14.61 @ 91.73

3rd pass backed off timing to 36 degrees total advance,

60' 2.01 1/8 mile 9.23 @ 75.28 1/4 mile 14.54 @ 91.57

4th & 5th pass changed long yellow secondary spring to the purple spring.

60' 2.06 1/8 mile 9.26 @ 75.53 1/4 mile 14.55 @ 91.92
60' 2.06 1/8 mile 9.27 @ 75.41 1/4 mile 14.56 @ 91.93

Changed back to the long yellow spring.

60' 2.03 1/8 mile 9.21 @ 75.66 1/4 mile 14.48 @ 92.12

Left @ 2500 rpms on the converter.

60' 2.08 1/8 mile 9.35 @ 74.91 1/4 mile 14.69 @ 91.18
60' 2.02 1/8 mile 9.25 @ 75.15 1/4 mile 14.58 @ 91.55

Decided to open up the cutouts and mess around a bit. :D Coulda went faster but it was fun running open headers!

60' 2.11 1/8 mile 9.33 @ 75.53 1/4 mile 14.62 @ 92.12
60' 2.16 1/8 mile 9.38 @ 75.39 1/4 mile 14.68 @ 91.88

I got my new converter restalled and it seems to leave the best @ 1800 rpms against the brake. You can then shock it to 3600 rpms and it goes like shit!

I also wasnt running my electric water pump drive because I was having problems with that.

Later,

Doug

Beautiful work.

I am re-built my 200, but I have some asq.
