Harmonic balancer

I know I know I know, same place sent me the wrong chain, maybe he was thinking Holden Grey motor, so do you think I have a potential issue? Would the balancer bolt even though to the naked eye looked ok, went in straight and thread was easy to start be an issue?

Can someone advise what the ARP balancer bolt and washer part number is or what its cross referenced with? I think one of the areas I’m having an issue with could be the bolt. Has a vibration in it, but its not the new balancer, only other difference is the 5mm extra it sits out and the slight misalignment that causes with the pulley, the pulley and balancer are very close together also

I'm not sure if the bolt is the same for the 200 & 221 but the ARP bolt that I ordered through Classic Inlines (ARP-200-BBK) did not fit my 221, am just going to use the original one

I doubt that the balancer bolt itself could be causing a bad vibration though? Can you visibly see the balancer running out of balance/true?

Any other changes i.e. flywheel, clutch etc?

I also had heaps of trouble sourcing parts for my 221, everyone wanted to sell me stuff for a V8 or a 250 crossflow :banghead:

All the Classic Inlines Arp bolts use a generic code applying only to Classic, yeah I'm not sure, I wanted to build a hotty 221 but parts and availability make the engine exotic now. Balancer us running true, bolt was only thing not replaced. When I enter the shed I will check over the the whole wagon, could be mount related, it is coming from front of me so not a uni or shaft. Motor has a real big rough running patch, I can only think is timing related. I did 15 pass's in it at the drags

The bolt I got from CI didn't fit my 200. When I talked to Mike he was shocked because he'd sold a number of them and didn't have any issues with a 200 before. I don't have the packaging anymore, but I remember it saying that it was for a 429/460. I just kept the bolt because I have a bare-block 429 sitting in the garage. For the 200, I just went to the tractor supply store and bought a grade-8 bolt. That being said, I don't race...

You might try calling ARP with the info on the original bolt (length, thread count, diameter).

Quote the bolt Size as 9/16-18 X 1-3/4”, this is not the bolt head, and the early 144 is 55lb-ft bolt toque, and the later 170/200 engines were 85-95lb-ft

From page 25 to 33 of http://www.melvinsclassicfordparts.com/ ... _25-33.pdf

Stock early SBF Windsors before the serpentine belt balancer were 5/8-18 threads per inch X 1-3/4” 15/16” Hex Bolt that is U$ 4.00 for AMK1191, Same as any SBF 221-260-289-351w, to BB 332-352-360-361-390-391-406-427-428, and 385 series 370-429-460 (except the SBF 351C)

Stock I6's were 9/16-18 X 1-3/4” U$ 4.50 for AMK281

The bolt is an "ARP #150-2501 balancer bolt and washer fits ford v8 except 351C and inline 6". Its a 5/8-18 RH Thread Underhead Length (in): 2.050 in, Overall Length (in):2.87 (for 79-95 5.0L Windsors)

150-2501.jpg

The ARP #150-2503 also doesn't fit, it fits ford v8 except 351C and inline 6 and others not listed. Its a 5/8-18 RH Thread, Underhead Length (in): 1.880 in (for 70-83 302C/351C)

The answer is simple...I'd say Ford changed the front bolt not at all, and the front balancer bolt was accidently wrong from Mike because of a mistake by ARP. The missing ARP #150-2502 balancer bolt is what it should be, but ARP don't make one.....

My Falcon worshop manual gives very little info on Balancers, doesn't talk about any differences. As you had written above, it says 55 foot pound for the earlier bolt but my book says 100 pound for the later 200. And who knows how many times it's been torqued up. I know one thing, the cheap ass balancer puller bolt, well that galled up something bad. You put the bolts side by side and the 1968 one wins that contest. I'm still a little confused on the ARP bolt. Thanks for info, I will re read and re try to comprehend the written word....

 Have you put a dial indicator on the balancer to check its run out in both directions? I.E.on the balancer face and edge to measure for wobble in and out, as well as up and down. Good luck

I found a few loose bolts today, engine mount, a few not so tight engine to gearbox bolts, tomorrow, it's on the back and jack her up and check under the mule. Balancer runs true to my eye Bubba

Its simple in French units....Kiwis like them, Azza

The 170-188-200-221/ OZ 250 use a 14.3 mm diameter thick bolt with a 44.45 mm long shank. It's its own design, common from 1963 to 1992 on non cross flow logs, 2V's and X-flows.

Aint anyway similar to the 15.8 mm diameter thick, 221/260/255/289/302/351 Windsors, Boss 302's, FE's or Lima 385

Aint anyway similar to the 15.8 mm diameter thick 302C/351C/351M or 400 Ford.

No way, no how a 15.8 bolt gonna fit in a 14.3 mm hole, it'll bottom out with in a turn of three.

I decided that perhaps I might take the one off my 1972 XA 200 log head engine...

thanks mate, another motor mate told me on StalkBook that theres no way the vibration will be bolt related, if its in the hole and its done up to spec and I’ve been racing it with no dramas or throwing belts etc. Motor is a little heavy at front still so, a thermo fan might be the order of the day.
