Hi everyone i have another question about compatibility. I have a 1964 144ci and found some one that says they have a four bearing 170 crank will this work in it with minimal modifications and what kind would I need. Also are there any other tips to get more power from a 144 thanks.

Yeah, after the 170 crank and rods,

the 170 head, six 19/16 internal diameter pipes

three 45 DCOE's

A big cam...and your 144 is Dynamite!

With the stock head casting, and killer modifications like the Aussie three DCOE 45 set up made by Paul Knott, there is a true 280 flywheel hp from just 170 cubic inch engine that made 105 hp gross, 72 net flywheel hp or just 57 rear wheel hp. A 289% boost in power.

With a few tubes and some knowledge, Paul Knott is getting 280 hp at as low as 6500 rpm from just 170 cubes in his 6 XK Falcon.

Yes the 170 crank would drop right into your 144 block! Besides the crank you will also need the 170 Connecting Rods and 170 Pistons too. When your all done you will have a compleate 170 short block. If you can find a 170 head with larger valves that would also help build more power. Good luck on the swap. :rolflmao: Looks like X is a much faster on the keyboard then me too (y) edited

what yr 170 'internals',
what yr 170 head,
how much to boar out the 144?
(I would think w/that crank, con rod & piston it would hit the head?)

The seven bearing 170 crank was rare, so most 170's will be four bearing in the US. Ford US did some seven bearing specials, but 99 out 100 170's will be four bearing... I think 1972 was the last year the US 170.

Down here, everything after 1964 got seven main bearings.

The 2.5 to 2.94" stroke difference is taken care of by the one size fits 4.855" rods and 1.738" tall pistons in the 144.

The 170 has the really common 200 size 4.715" conrod, and 1.618" piston in the 170.

the info I use differs a liitle from Classic Inlines historicals, I'm sure 7.803" is the bluue printed 0 deck, and that 1.531 and 4.715 are right for a stock 7.830 . But 1.511 is 25 thou down a 7.808" deck block. Take my readings with a grain of salt, but that's bassically what they are.

Chad, the stock 144's and 170's also shared the exact same bore size of 3.50, so no boring is needed except if it's also time for a rebuild anyway. (y)
