Camshaft installation

Got my block decked, and started putting things back together tonight. I have the. Killer timing gear set from vintage inline. For those of you who have installed it, how much space should be between the front of the cam gear and the front of the cam shaft?

The key is in the slot.

I"m seeing a thrust plate used for the cam, so until the forward movement of the cam is about the same as the crank thrust. This will confirm the gear is fully seated on the snout of the cam.

X2 looks good so far until it's tighten down and the cam comes forward were it needs to be against the thrust plate.

Thanks fellas for the quick responses, I took a screwdriver and put it through a lifter hole (being careful not to mar any lobes), and pried forward on the cam while tapping the gear lightly with a rubber mallet until it seemed to bottom out. I'll play with it some more tomorrow

Did you install the spacer ring on the camshaft which goes in between the gear & the front cam bearing. Its about 1/8" thick.
