Hi everyone a while ago I posted a question asking if I could bore and stroke a 144ci to a 170. I found that boring the motor could breach the cooling jacket. I know the only difference in the very early 170 sixes were there stroke. If I found a 170 crank could I do this if so what would I have to do and is it possible to do it without a 170 4 main crank thanks

The 144 and 170 both have the same bore size of 3.500. So to make a 170 short block out of a 144 you would need to find a four main 170 crankshaft (for its .440 longer stroke), plus a set of the 170 / 200 lenght connecting rods, and the matching 170 pistons. Yes it's possible to do it without a 170 crank by having your 144 crank welded up and then offset ground to the 170's stroke (2.940) but that could likely cost more than a 170 crank. Or you could also build a 181 Cu. In. Short block by using the early four main 200 (3.126 stroke) crankshaft, along with the same 170 / 200 connecting rods, plus a set of 181 pistons. You would also need a different solid lifter cam to take advantage of the increased stoke of your short block plus a bigger set of valves to help it breath or to use a 170 or 200 head. Good luck
