Hesitates when giving it the gas

Hi all. New member first post. I have a 68 convertible, 3.3L, 200 ci, 6 cylinder, automatic transmission. New autolite 1100 carb, new coil, new points, condenser, rotor and rotor cap, new ignition wiring pigtail. Curbside idle is set to 700 RPMs, timing is set to 12 degrees BTDC. My problem is a slight hesitation when accelerating slowly, to the point of stalling. If I punch the gas it will take off fine. I had the idle set to 550-600 RPMs but it would stall when taking off slowly, on a turn at a light in traffic for example. I've bumped the timing up to 14 and down to 10, both made it worse. I've gone down the road adjusting the idle fuel mixture screw a 1/2 turn every few hundred yards trying to find the sweet spot. I've gotten it the best that I can but it still slightly hesitates, almost like it's going to stall if I accelerate slowly. It would not be good in the neighborhood 4th of July parade for example. Any suggestions? I appreciate the help. Oh....and this is my wife's car....and she won't drive it unless it's trouble free. My car has a little more giddyup and go in it.

 I think first off if can you post some pictures of your engines Parts like the Carb, Distribitor, vacuum lines etc. This will help variafy that you have all the right combo of parts that a 1968 200 needs to run and drive trouble free. Good luck (y)

rather than 'poke'n hope' I would use bubba's great post on covering each step in good curb idle (AND this one on 'right components').
Otherwise U just attack whatever comes to mind. Mine sez "float'n needle'n seat", fuel filter (& on & on) but that's all speculation. Do the 8 or 10 steps correctly & the prob will show it'self.

I'm having a similar problem except that my Fairlane has a little hesitation if I give it more than half throttle. I've recently replaced the Autolite 1100 with a Carter RBS. The similarity between these two cases is a replaced carb so far as I can tell.

Howdy Gene:

And welcome to The Forum. Yes, it is that good.

After checking for vacuum leaks and electrical issues, my suspicion is that the accelerator pump is not functioning. How long since the carb was rebuilt? To check, remove the air cleaner and peer down the carb throat, with the engine off. With the choke butterfly open so you can see past it. Now watch for a squirt of gas while the throttle is being opened. You should see a strong squirt. A flash light is helpful. The accelerator pump is weak on these carbs and typically needs to be replaced every few years.

If the squirt is weak or none the solution is to do a carb rebuild. A rebuild kit typically runs $50 or so. It will include a new accelerator pump diaphram. There are several good videos on line to help you through the rebuild. IF your Autolite 1100 is in good shape, this is the way to go. Don't be fooled into thinking that buying a rebuilt carb is the way to go. Rebuilt carbs are usually a mix of parts. Cleaning, prepping and assembly is often questionable

Another thought, check to make sure that the vacuum advance in the distributor is working as designed.

IF you do need to replace your carb, consider an Autolite 1101 from a 1969 Mustang with a 250 engine. This carb is rated at 210 cfm. your carb, if original, is rated at 150 cfm.

Keep us posted on your findings and your progress. And again, welcome to The Forum.

Adios, David

If you have fuel squirting out the pump nozzles, check the linkage & adjust hole location for the most discharge.

"check the linkage & adjust hole location for the most discharge"

How is this done? What specifically would one adjust? Though I'm not exactly sure where the fuel is coming out.

Check out the carb video's below, on accelerator pump and bench settings for that info. Good luck (y)

Howdy All:

WOW Bubba! Where was all this info back in the early '90s when I tore into my 1100. I tried searching on my first Apple 2e computer. "We've come a long ways, Baby!"

Thanks for compiling the list, Bubba. I hope it is made into a "Sticky".

Adios, David
