Part Interchangeability

I've come to learn, with huge help from this forum, that my block is a '78 (D8BE-GE) and my head is from an '80-82 (E0BE-BB). When purchasing parts, I notice minor part number differences, but in most cases look identical. Take these water pumps:

CARDONE 5521119 (1978 FORD FAIRMONT 3.3L 200cid L6)
https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=680342&cc=1127562&jsn=12744&jsn=12744&jsn=12744

CARDONE 5521112 (1968 FORD MUSTANG 3.3L 200cid L6)
https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=680238&cc=1132311&jsn=12747

I assume I should purchase the 1978 Fairmont water pump, or? Any insight?

It depends on what vehicle you're installing the engine in.

CARDONE 5521119 (1978 FORD FAIRMONT 3.3L 200cid L6)
6 impellers, rotates clockwise, hub height - 4.79"

CARDONE 5521112 (1968 FORD MUSTANG 3.3L 200cid L6)
8 impellers, rotates counter-clockwise, hub height - 3.95"

The one for the 68 Mustang won't work in a 78 Fairmont, and the one for the 78 Fairmont won't work in a 68 Mustang.

Hope this helps.

I have a '68 Mustang with what appears to be an engine transplant, block/head codes in my op.

Im not sure which parts I should order. It would make sense that given the block is a '78, I should buy parts for a '78, but the car body is a '68 Mustang.

I think you have to use the 68 pump since the 78 is longer and might hit the radiator. I ran into this issue when i looked at putting a 78 200 into my 65 Ranchero. I supossedly had to change the balancer and water pump to make it work. But the 65 is a smaller car. Whats in it now? Measure the length of the pump and match it.

Check long and short nose three bolt water pumps. One is 4 inches, the other later one is 4-1/2 inches like the four bolt 250 water pump. Fans differ to suit the ancillary drive; so do pulleys. Crank pulleys on the 250 wont fit 200s. Rickwrench is da mayn on how to repurpose the long snout Fox 78 to 83 pump to fit a rounbody ...a new pump pulley was copied from his websites brother of Richwrench design. Same smarts with using the Alfa Romeo Alfetta and Mercedes Benz 190E clutch for 2.77 trsnsmissions. The guy is a painting and airsuit guru.

Classic in lines inventory was taken over byMat Cox at Vintage in lines. There are all sorts of guys who have made serp drives, and used other US modular or Aussie 1.24 whatever serp crank bakancers to perform a full serpentine drive. Well, two anyway

67straightsix and Broncitus. Do the advanced search and look at my updated photos from photobucket. I could post, but if you blink, you might miss details. In the history of FordSix.Com, your needs are served by hunting through posts like a survivalist before nightfall. If in doubt; keep asking.

there's a lill help frm the Handbook too.
I grabbed the alu from Summit that's suggested frm there: prt #
GMB-125-1380
for my '69 250, w/o realizin it was the recommended (better impeller to move more H2O in an AC car).
I forget but the last number (1380) may change for the 200 if U have that (12xx?).
Look in the Handbook for some pic, look on line Summit to compaire, understand more....
GMB is a recommended co as well.

That counterclockwise spec on the 78 has to be a typo by the mfr. There were no serpentine 200's, they all go clockwise as far as I know. There is a short and long version.

"...short and long version...." snout .
Again - see p 45, Handbook.
