1962 Ford Falcon Help

Post #1 by henrydreil » Mon Feb 12, 2018 8:08 pm

Howdy,

I'm restoring a '62 Ford Falcon back to stock and I needed some help in identifying the right transmission. The car is set up for three-on-the-tree and that's the way I intend to go with it. What type of transmission came stock in '62 Falcon. I know it hovers right around the T86 but there seems to be so many options when it comes to that as well as far spline input and output count and OD and all. Please let me know, it would be a huge help.

Thanks,

-hd

hd,

Welcome to the forum.

The T86 was used in 1955-1962 six and V8 intermediate passenger cars.

The stock 3 speed transmission for the 1962 Ford Falcon would have been what is called the 2.77 transmission. This refers to the distance between the internal shafts. It has an unsynchronized first gear. The clutch disc would be 8.5-inches in diameter in a recessed flywheel. This transmission was used in the Falcon and Mustang up to 1966. In 1967 Ford began using the 3.03 transmission with a 9-inch clutch disc; this transmission was synchronized in all forward gears.

The 3.03 transmission cannot be used with the earlier engines because the bellhousing is larger, and the earlier engine blocks do not have the bolt pattern for the bellhousing.

Looking at pictures of the T86, it may be possible to use the transmission with the Falcon six. The early Econlines used a different three speed transmission behind the same 6 cyl engine that the Falcon had; I'm guessing the transmission may have been the T85. The bellhousing had the same narrow bolt pattern as a Borg Warner T10, and that seems to be the same bolt pattern as the T86.

Here is a website that has diagrams for the transmission used by Ford up to the early 60s:

Hope this helps.
Dan

X2 yes the early Falcons and Comets only came equipped with one of two choices either a 2.77 3 speed trans (no overdrives) or a 2 speed
FordOMatic, since these cars were low in cost and built for economy the gearing was about optimal for great MPG. Somewhere on my computer and also maybe still on this site, I have some pictures of a 2.77 that sitting in my shop. Good luck
A bad day Drag Racing is still better than a good day at work!

I am still hunting for a project car to build but with my current low budget it's not looking so good. My Ex- Fleet of Sixes these are all long gone! :bang: 1954 Customline 223 3 speed with O/D, 1963 Fairlane project drag car with BB6, 1977 Maverick 250 with C4, 1994 F-150 a 300 with 5 speed.
