what slip yoke do use for 61 2spd auto w/170ci

Post #1 by DOMER94 » Sun Jun 27, 2010 11:07 pm

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-DRIV ... ccessories

when i replaced my tailshaft seal recently, i noticed a slight scoring / groove on the yoke where the old seal was riding. i re-installed because i didnt have another. however , today i noticed it leaking again and it has to be due to this. i saw this yoke on ebay. can anybody confirm this is what i would need? or where i can get one? thanks

Another problem is that the tail shaft bushing will get worn from a rough yoke (some can be polished if not to bad) so if you do change the yoke it would most likely a good idea to change the bushing with it. Some seals have lip placed differently so they can be used to miss a grooved area check with calipers have found different brands of seals that were offset in this way.

thanks bubba, however i didnt see a bushing in there on my auto. when reading the shop manual, i was to understand that only the manuals had this bushing? if im wrong i stand corrected, also , the new seal i put in had the rubber boot extention on it which seemed to be in line with the one pictured in the manual. do you know where i can source a new yoke?

thanks

Yeah the bushing can be kind of hard to see but it's there and is nessary to suport the driveshaft yoke. When they wear out is also a reson for the seal to go out too.

There are severial places you can look like Mac's ant. auto parts also Dearborn Classics know they both have bushing and seals and NAPA was once a good sorce. Don't know what area your in but are some in the socal area that could tell you about too.

here is one online sorce that shows what yoke is right for a stock one.

good luck

this is the bushing / seal combo they had... i didnt see one for the auto . is this the one you mean? the yoke link you sent specified the 2.77 manual or 2 spd auto trans , but i dont want to assume the bushing is the same too.

It looks like it could be but can't find my Falcon parts book to check it. The bushing were many times the same for stick or auto trans, but some times the seals were not. These are the part numbers I have listed for a Fairlane two speed pretty sure that they would also be the same.

Falcon B3TZ-7A034-A Extension Housing Bushing Automatic Transmission 6 Cyl 200 Ford-O-Matic 2 Speed
Falcon C2AZ-7052-A Automatic transmission Seal Ford-O-Matic 2 speed & C4

Many of the Ford transmissions used the same bushing and seal

i saw that bushing listed at mac's for the 200 6 cyl. i am just curious why they wouldnt list all the motors and only the 200 and only specify 1964? even if they are indeed the same. i just hate ordering the wrong crap man.

also i hate to beat a dead horse, but can you recommend a bushing puller and replacer? does napa have tools like that?

thanks again for the help

I've just swapped to a C4 from the 2spd auto so I have a yoke from a 61 170 with 2spd auto and a spare drive shaft & yoke from a 60 144 2psd auto which is the same.

I know some of these parts books and online listings do it differently and it can be frustrating. If you had access to the old ford catalogs they listed parts several ways body style, engine and trans combos etc. But they would also have cross-reference of these parts by numbers. Here’s a number you can try its for Jim Gordon at Specialty Ford Parts in Rosemead, Ca (626) 280-4546. Years ago I had a Hot Rod Shop a few doors down the street from theirs he is a very knowledgeable guy with old Fords think he will have many the old Ford catalogs so you could find out the numbers and more than likely he probably has the parts too.

One other source that was very good years ago NAPA their catalogs were excellent to cross reference don’t know if you can find an old timer that still knows how to use them but check with the main hubs that ship to other branch stores the mangers may be able to help you. I also have many of these old catalogs packed away some where don’t think I can find them fast enough to help you. Also Mac’s and Dearborn classic offer free catalogs probably take about 10 days to couple weeks depending on your location to them.

thanks again bubba... i have a napa near by that actually has non-kids working in it , i will give them a shot. i emailed the tech guys at falconparts and they seem to say the one listed does both auto and manuals.

do you guys have a suggestion on a bushing remover tool and installer? i am watching an old snap-on unit for fords on ebay , but if i can score one at napa or somewhere else you guys might know of , i would rather do that.

Old NAPA dealer I used, were very good to me sometimes they would loan me a tool so give them a try. If they also have a mechine shop they could do it too. I do have my own press and bushing drivers so it was not a problem for me for a long time. Before that when didn’t have much in tools I used unbolt the tail housing and cut the bushing out with a hack saw (two or three cuts part way through and or just carefully drive out with a cold chisel. Crude but would work of corse I don't recondend that way. :hmmm:
