Post #1 by 64 200 ranchero » Fri Sep 17, 2010 3:28 am

i just installed new shackle bushings on my ranchero, now when i go over 60mph my car vibrates like its going to fall apart, did i over tighten them?, i also found that my new rear end seal blew out, i just rebuilt the whole rear end like a month ago

Vibration could be from the rear end and this caused the seal to blow

Assuming the shackles are a matched set...IIRC shackle bushings should be final torqued with the axle/wheels on the ground...don't know if this is your situation...but I would assume it might be possible if you torque them with the axle off the ground (and maybe the shackles at slightly different angles...which might result in the axle out of allignment with the frame) to induce vibration :hmmm: :?:

If this only occurred since changing the shackles then I would manuallly check alligment from fixed points (as best you can) with a tape measure. Then inspect the usual suspects, u-joints, loose mounts, loose axle u-bolts, pinion angle, etc.
Good luck!
PS also recall reading earlier falcons having narrower springs...might make sure the shackles you've got are not too wide...too much play

'60-'63 Falcons have a 2" leaf spring...'64-up have 2.5" spring. You are correct about tightening things up at ride height. Same goes when replacing front suspension parts.
