knocking sound in my ford-o-matic?

Post #1 by smalltown62wagon » Tue Jan 25, 2011 12:18 am

long story but here i go. i have a 62 wagon with a ford-o-matic 2 speed behind a remanufactured 200. i put the engine in about 3 years ago and have maybe 5k on the engine. the car has basically sat for about two years until i had it towed to my new house. after checking the engine and turning it over with the coil disconnected to get some oil circulating, i started it up. the engine knocked, i shut the car off. i pulled the engine and tranny out together to search out the problem. the knocking turned out to be caused by a dented oil pan that happened during the tow. unfortunately i didn't figure that out until after i had unbolted( one by one) the bearing caps to check for possible damage. i re-torqued the caps, replaced the oil pan and am fairly confident that the engine is fine. while the engine and tranny were out i changed the filter and gasket on the tranny. when it was all put back together and i fired it up the engine ran great, that is until i test drove the car. as soon as i backed out onto the street and started to move fowards it started making a knocking sound, but would stop when i let of the accelerator. hit the gas, knocking, let off and idle, normal.i limped it home and put it back up on jack stands.i check motor mounts, fixed loose tranny lines, checked tranny mount, everything looks good. started it up yesterday, it knocked for about 10-20 seconds then smoothed out, but in reverse or drive it knocks, but sporadically. i read that having the wrong tranny fluid could be cause damage, mine calls for type A but i used castrol dex/merc.it seems to be leaking alot more too, although i might just notice it more because i was under the car all fn weekend trying to figure it out. any suggestions would really help.

My exhaust is very close to the body and crossmember.
At some rpms it vibrates against the car causing a weird sound.

Never ever use Dextron  in an old Ford auto trans it has too much slipage designed into it. At least put the type F in and be sure to drain the torque coverter too

+1 to this. I have completely R&R'd a whole transmission for a 2nd time after putting it in to try and find a new weird knock/rattle that was ultimately traced to an exhaust system component rattling against a part of the drivetrain or chassis. I'm telling you the sound is weird, really sounds like it is coming from the transmission.

the mechanic at the transmission shop put it up on a lift and could definitely hear the knocking coming from the front of the transmission but he couldn't determine what was causing it, he said maybe a loose or cracked flywheel? what a headache! i guess the next step is to take it back out and he is going to perform a visual, free! if anyone in northern california needs some tranny work done take it to brian at high speed transmission in stockton, he has been beyond helpful! any other thoughts would be appreciated, although it looks like this is going to cost me.damnitman!!!

i have also 'heard' ( get out clause!) that knocking can be a loose bolted converter to flex plate - or a cracked flex plate.
keep us updated -

my 1961 falcon wagon with fordomatic has a slight rythmic knock as well but its in storage as a future project - so not crtical for me to fix now.

ok found the problem, well kinda. i removed the tranny, then the flex plate. on the plate between the engine and bell housing there are two round indentations the size of the studs from the torque converter and a gash in the plate near where the starter sits, so it is obvious the torque converter stud is hitting the plate when the engine is under load. the question is why. i just dropped the tranny and torque converter at the shop so was unable to inspect. the t.c. was tight against the flex plate, maybe a bent flex plate? i might be able to post pics

Pic might help. though just a guess witout seeing it, did you maybe have it apart and then on reassemby not get the drain hole plug on the T.Q. into it's notch on the flex plate?

the only thing i can figure is that i used lock washers on the torque converter and that must have pushed the nuts out just enough to hit the plate. i banged the plate back flat and put the nuts back on without the lock washers and put it back together and now it's back to normal. the rest of the car rattles and makes alot of noises going down the road but i can identify them all and i know that new widow rubber, suspension parts, and a new rear end will fix those, in time. next project is the front end! all the parts are worn out and need replacing, is there a complete kit available out there or do i have to buy each part separately? i am on a very limited budget. thanks for the imput and it was so rad driving my wagon after over two years, she's about to be a daily driver again!!!

i know the sound you mean my 63 wagon does the same thing sometimes. it seems to happen more when it is hot and i have been driving then stop say to get gas. it will last for about 20 seconds then go away. it is one of those weird sounds that it has done for a long time and have had no issues that came of it. almost sounds like the pump is not getting full fluid right away and i am sure it is worn so it knocks around for a bit till it makes pressure. i am in galt you mentioned you are getting it fixed in stockton
