Bought a Falcon. Is it 1962 or 1963?

Post #1 by TheDude » Tue May 24, 2011 11:36 pm

I just brought home a 1962 or 1963 Ford Falcon 2 door Futura tonight. The owner was telling me it was a 1962 model, but the VIN begins with "3."

I decoded it on this website, and it told me it was a '62, built November 1962. Wouldn't they be building the '63 models by then?

This website decodes it as a '63.

It originally had the 144ci engine. I'm not sure what is currently in there. It's an I6. I'll have to see what's been done to it because it's been rebuilt.

Check out this thread and scroll down for a picture of the car I just bought. I will post some pictures tomorrow. If the weather is nice I can take some decent ones. That one is from the PO.

I'm a Mustang guy first, so I have much to learn about identifying Falcons. I can't believe I actually own a 2 door Falcon now! Awesome!

Also,

It came with a new carpet, but the carpet is a dark blue. I need a turquoise carpet. Anyone have one to trade, or does anyone need a brand new blue carpet?

Yes a car built in Nov. 62 would be a 63 model with a Vin 3 code. The new cars used to hit the show room about in mid Sept. When I worked on Ford assembly line we did model changer over in summer about end of June or early July. on your new Falcon

I agree, on Fords (and some Chevys) of that era, the first number is the model year.

To determine what engine you have, count the freeze plugs on the exhaust side of the block; three plugs - 144 or 170, five plugs - 200.
Pull a plug and measure the stroke with a wire (be careful)
2.50" - 144.
2.94" - 170.
3.126" - 200.

Nice Falcon.

The engine block is a 1966 200ci, and it looks like the head is also a '66, which would lead me to believe that it's from the same 200ci engine. That's cool. I wasn't thrilled with the idea of having a 144 or 170 engine.

I have a headliner question. Like Mustangs, does the front and rear glass need to come out to replace the headliner?

Yes the front and back glass would have to come out to do replace it.
