Engine size???

Post #1 by hobbyhorse » Wed Jul 27, 2005 8:31 pm

I want to know how i can figure out the size of my engine.
I dont know, i think its a 200, But the hood doesnt close when i tried on an air cleaner.
My vin number says that my car was an original 200 Inline six, But i have serious doubts. The guy who had it before me must of changed the engine for some reason.
Can someone please help me?[/list]

You can look at the casting numbers. You can also see if it has the small block v8 bell pattern.

Howdy Hobby Horse:

Is there an air cleaner on it now? Is it the original carb? Can you take a photo to post?

How many bolts hold the water pump on? Three - 200, Four - 250.

Where is the starter located? Above the oil pan rim - 200, Below the oil pan rim - 250.

The starter location is a rule of thumb. Some 200s have a low mount starter (engines made after 1980)

The casting code on the block can help identify the engine.

Number of freeze plugs on the exhaust side of the block will determine if it is a 170 or 200/250.
Three freeze plugs - 170, Five freeze plugs - 200/250

Hope this helps.
