I have an 83 Eagle wagon with the plastic external engine oiler ( valve cover ) on top. I have access to a free 88 head. Are there mechanical reasons not to make this swap, using 83 intake/ exhaust and ditching the FI setup?

This vehicle is to be scrapped so if anyone needs anything let me know.

SW Missouri near Joplin.

I'm not sure, but I think the 88 head should be a bolt on swap with the possible exception of perhaps some sort of emissions systems differences. Both engines are 258 cubic inch (4.2 liter) inline sixes, right? If so, I doubt there will be any complications.

If the 88 head is from a 4.0 liter engine, however you'll want to look at this web page linked just below.

4.2L Head Conversion -- Putting a 4.0L head on a 4.2L block!!

The 4.0 liter head can be made to work on the 4.2 liter engine, but there is a bit of work involved. Read that article I linked for more info on that.
