Intake/exhaust gaskets

I took my intake and exhaust off to free up the heat riser valve and address a suspected vacuum leak. I was surprised to find that the exhaust had no gasket or sealer evident at all, neither at the manifold-to-head surface nor at the intake-to-exhaust heat riser surface. Parts diagrams show the individual crush ring gaskets for the intake ports, but no gaskets for the exhaust. The new fel-pro gasket covers all ports at the head, but includes nothing for the heat riser mating surface.

How is the exhaust supposed to be sealed?

The FelPro gasket will provide a very good seal at the ports (y)

The intake to exhaust manifold interface for the 56 223 does not use a gasket. I actually contacted Fel-Pro about it and they confirmed. I believe the manual calls for use of a thin sealer, but that's it. I finished the rebuild on my engine accordingly and have not had a problem. I did use a gasket between the manifolds and the head.

Hi, we used to check and "fix" heat risers with a hammer and penetrating oil. If they "flapped", they were good. Good luck
