What ignition system?

Post #1 by jason832 » Mon Jan 28, 2019 3:12 pm

Currently I have a fairly built 300, duraspark 2 ignition. My distributor is crusty and I can't get into it to change the advance curve on it so I'm stuck with stock or buying another distributor. Emissions in my area is no concern. Truck is a daily driver that sees high milage and long trips.

The summit hei distributor is on sale, it can be recurved easily. Aperantly it does not use a module, just three wire hookup (power, ground, tach) and its good to go. Are the summit units any good?

What would everyone recommend?
1. Replace the stock distributor and recurve it.
2. Summit hei setup.
3. Duraspark unit with an msd box.

I'll have a read through tonight. I don't know a huge amount about ignitions so I'll be happy to learn.

Also I will add cost isn't a huge concern. Just looking for the best in terms of reliability and power.

I'm sure the Summit piece is great. Whatever you do don't buy one of the knock offs on Ebay. i did that and it ate the distributor gear on my cam in about a year. Come to find out the metal in the gear has to be correct or it will do this.
I was going to put in the Summit unit in my new engine but spent the money for the DUI from Performance Distributors. whole bunch of spark!

Jason832, check with Bill [wsa111]. He sold me a NOS Motorcraft Duraspark distributor which he recurved for my application [formerly a feedback 1986 with EGR removed]. I currently use a MSD 6AL ignition module. The truck runs great and returns good gas mileage.

ds2 is hard to beat.
NOS dist. are still around cheap.
recurve is nice if you are modified
HEI rocks, it's my favorite mod. fun simple and effective.
it has a drawback but Lotsa pluses.

I have used 5 ignition systems: stock points, MSD 6A (before they went digital), the Summit box (the stronger of the two, when they made two), the GM 4 pin, and an MSD 6A digital. I liked the performance of the MSD the best. The 4 pin is a step down in pep, noticeable. I do, however, keep a 4 pin in the glove box with aligator clips on wires so I can hook it up on the fly if my MSD dies.

I've been curious for the longest time to try one of the Mopar modules. They are copied everywhere, and that usually means that they work great.

The downside of the DS2, as I see it, is the magnetic pick-up module. They are now being made in China with the life span of a gnat, compared to oem MotorCraft ones that lasted 40+ years. If that fails, it's tow truck time. But, there's a downside to everything.

interesting comments.
The Mopar guys( im one) are moving to the HEI module. the mopar unit is according to lore reliable but for the resistor which lessens voltage.
unless you are using the switching box in a different way from the mopar design where you can have 12v to the coil.

I like the MSD too but for the dammm wires all over and the physical size of the unit. my application may be different than yours. i have a slow moving ranch truck.

I have discovered that Borg Warner is making the HEI module stateside. State side means nothing if its junk too (seventies detroit iron) but at least its a change from the mealy mouth chinese.
i beleive its a BW world brand
It may be that the mopar unit is stateside too. that they make a magnetic pick up for the distributor ....etc.

the mopar unit is too many components for my liking. now my dodge has a HEI pinned to the fire wall next to the distributor . done. clean simple, and works .
with no research on the subject i have heard that the points distributor works well with the HEI also

I use the MSD with the DS2 distributor. Very satisfied. In use for 3 years with not one complaint.

I have used the same for maybe 8 years. The only downside is that this system seems to be hard on the distributor cap and rotor.

DS11 by far is the best distributor. The MSD-6al is a capacitive discharge system & uses 12V.
Get me a DS11 & i will recurve it.

PM or email me @ billythedistributorman@live.com
The Duraspark Module & Mopar do not use 12V so that is a downside. Bill
