New valve spring retainer suppliers?

Post #1 by OldTrusty80 » Thu Jan 09, 2020 12:02 pm

I'm hoping someone will be able to help me find a place to buy new intake valve spring retainers. I've checked online and haven't found any available, maybe someone has some they don't need laying around? I'm putting a new comp cam in my 300 and need them to replace the stock exhaust valve rotators and retainers to fit my new valve springs on. Thank you!

What springs are you using? I went with Comp 768 retainers with Comp 942 springs, and eliminated the rotators. I assume this is a 1980 300 ?

I'm using the 903-12 springs, and I had seen that the retainers from Comp would not work with these, so I figured on using stock retainers. The truck is a 1980 F-250, and I'm in the process of getting a mid 90's 300 converted to carbureted with a few upgrades to replace the 460 I had converted previously to replace the stock 400. Finally getting the right motor in lol! I'll be starting a thread on it soon hopefully

You are correct. I haven't found an aftermarket retainer to fit the Comp 903 springs.
I don't have any stock retainers left.
I'm hoping another member here can help you out.

Is there a local wrecking yard that might have a 300 six that you can get the stock retainers from?

Which Comp cam do you have?

There is a yard that's close to me I can check at, but they have a lot of newer vehicles and I not sure that they'll have a truck to pull them out of. But I will call them and ask! I have the 252/252 duration cam from Comp that I'll be running, which with the Edelbrock DP intake, 500 cfm Edelbrock carb, EFI headers, and a Ebay 1 wire HEI dizzy should work well together! I'm really doing a budget build up on this motor, and it's taken me a while to get the parts I have for cheap, so if anyone does have extra retainers to sell that would be helpful for sure :D

Is anyone able to point me in the right direction for finding new retainers? Another thing crossed my mind, do the retainers off a 302 or 351 fit or are they different?

I am not sure if they will work, but I have the intake retainers (and exhaust rotators) from my 68 240 head. When this head was rebuilt sometime in the pas, it was done with late model 300 valves and parts. I have no need for them, so I will be happy to send them to you, if they may work.
