EGR 1996 F150

Post #1 by 96F150 » Wed May 24, 2006 7:42 am

making a new thread, since noone replied to my question in another EGR thread.

reading here, i see that it would be better for me to just fix my EGR valve.

i've been having a CEL come on and off for over a month now. i had it scanned and the slip said "EGR flow exceeding". the truck was scanned with the ignition on, engine off.

would a bad EGR valve set off that code, or is there something else down the line that would cause that code to show? how do i check to see if the EGR valve is good or bad? i just don't feel like dumping 60-70 dollars and the problem/code not clear up.

thanks.

on fuel injected modles its always best just to fix that way when you go and test your truck it dosent throw that code anymore. on my 87 150 before it died i replaced an it actually ran alot better

the first thing i would do before throwing $$$ at it is take off the egr valve and clean it, it could just be dirty and thats causing it to stick open. if that fails, probably get a new valve

i see a bunch of covers and hoses, but wheres the engine?  :D
well i cant see jack in there, but it should be right below the throttle body. itll be the only thing on the intake that has exhaust attached to it. maybe a closer look around the intake manifold might help

There's a steel tube coming out of the rear exhaust manifold. It runs up and across thr top rear of the engine and connectd to a valve on the upper intake just downstream of and to the rear of the throttle body. That is your EGR valve. You'll need a replacement gasket if you pull it off to clean it.
