Having a major problem and I could use some help!

Post #1 by Brian339 » Mon Nov 12, 2012 7:52 pm

I did the first oil change since I bought my truck. It has a 6 cylinder 300. I added seafoam. The plan was to run it for 500 miles and change it again. Looking for a fresh start. After about an hour of idleing and 5'miles of driving my oil light comes on. Almost immediately the valve train gets load. I figure the seafoam loosed all the sludge maybe the oil filter is plugged. I change oil and filter which looks like black paint.
Valve train is still load. I took the valve cover off. I dont see any oil moving I suspect it should be right?
I am not a mechanic just a weekend warrior. I could use some help.
Thanks

It sounds like the Seafoam has knocked enough crud loose that it has clogged the pickup screen of your oil pump.

Other than dropping the pan and pulling the pickup tube, I'm not real sure how to fix it.

That is exactly what has happened and will need to happen in order to "save" it.
1 "76" F150 RC, LB, 2WD, 300, NP435, 9" open 3.00, special order 2-76/Delivered 4-76. Still "new".

1 "73-79" F150 RC/SS/SB/4WD, "84"-300, T18, NP205, 9" open 3.50, Dana 44 3.50 open, Offy DP, Holley 470, EFI + single 2.5" exhaust. Gathered from 15+ donor/parts trucks. "Fubar". Runs good, safe, still needs details/project continues.

FWIW:
In the future, keep away from the heavy-duty carbon shakers/scrubbers on an engine of unknown provenance.
Just change the filter which will put you down a quart or so and top up with kerosene. It's a much gentler solvent and is much less likely to clog things. Let it idle for 15 minutes or so; you can even drive it a few miles if you're very gentle with the throttle. Then toss the filter you just put on it and change the oil and filter.

Mr. StrangeRanger,

Thanks for that suggestion. In the past, others have suggested doing a similar thing except using a quart of ATF, supposedly due to its detergent package. What is the advantage of kerosene?

Thank you!

I've heard that ATF can attack some seal materials - don't know or want to find out for sure.
