I got this motor from a friend who said it was out of a van with under 100,000 miles on it. I have put on at least another 90-100 k on it. So I figured I should see what condition its in.

Hi, I'd say the numbers are pretty good. Why are you concerned?

I was thinking about switching the stock cam for a crane 901, but I did not know the condition of this engine.
What is a fresh motor in stock form supposed to put out?

Re: What do you think of these compression numbers?
Hi, If that was mine I would think about giving it rings and bearings, with a light hone and plasti gauge the crank. Along with going over the head. Good luck

Hi Wesman07,
If you have an analog gauge, what oil pressure are you seeing at cruise and hot idle?

Re: What do you think of these compression numbers?
I don't know what my oil pressure is but I know the pump is new.
I think I'll save the new cam for a fresh motor and just advance this one

What are you going to use to advance the cam?
Re: What do you think of these compression numbers?
A cloyes timing set. Is there another option?

Mr Gasket 987G offset cam key.
It will get you 4 degrees at the crank when you use it with the cam gear.
The Mr Gasket 988G will get you 8 degrees at the crank when used with the cam gear
Re: What do you think of these compression numbers?
You would recommend degreeing the original gears over replacing the set?
I would imagine that would be a heck of a lot easier to do, but shouldn't I be concerned about the fiber gear?
Also, how much should I go? Aren't there diminishing returns after a certain point?

You are right concerning replacing the fiber gear.
I would get a steel replacement set and use the offset key.
I'm not real confident with the Cloyes aluminum cam gear either. There have been a few here that have had noise problems.
I would go 4 degrees advance. If you go 8 then you lose some horsepower but more importantly the engine becomes more prone to detonation.
