Cam and possibly other upgrades on 300

Post #1 by 94f150rules » Wed Nov 29, 2017 9:57 pm

I just bought a 94 F150 with a 300 and a 5 speed. It has a bad lifter so I was thinking why not get some more power out of it. I'd like to put a bigger cam in. What do you guys recommend. Is there anything else I can do? I was considering roller rockers, and cutting the cat off my manifold and running true duals off of it.

I think the big question is... what do you want to do with it?

There is a pretty solid data base of information here. Almost every combo has been done and reflected appon. Searching these old posts might help you decided what you really need and what's worth it.

The stock EFI head rockers use bolt down fulcrums.
In order to use roller rockers the head needs to be drilled and tapped for screw-in studs and will also need pushrod guide plates.

Metal timing gears are also a must with an aftermarket cam

Not to mention you have to install a timing gear on the new cam anyway and it's already out of the truck to begin with so it's really a no-brainier.
1994 F150 4x4 8ft, engine is basically stock.

66" leafs, extended radius arms, lockers in both ends, nothing special.

Scorpion is making a bolt down roller rocker for the Ford 4.9l - 300 with a 1.73 ratio now. The part number is SCP 1059 sold by Summit Racing. Promise date of Feb 8 right now.

That is good news for all late model 4.9 owners. I wonder how much they are? They will essentially mimic the valve motion of many RV/towing cams without the need to get into the long block.

246 doesn't seem bad for rockers, especially on a not so common engine. My goals for the truck aren't much, basically I'm going to swap a 5 speed 4x4 setup in for getting to work in the winter, i just bought a house and will haul things like roofing materals, sheet rock, and top soil, but other than that, it's going to be my daily driver, and I may buy a plow and occasionally plow my drive way and the neighbors with it. I'm just looking for a little more power, the truck seems to have tons of bottom end torque but on the highway it doesn't have much passing power. The problem with the truck is it was the company I work for's truck and its basically been the job site truck for the last 10 years. So only basics to keep it running have been done to it. To give you an idea, they waited until it wouldnt start to tune it up. But it does have a whole new clutch setup and it does get oil changes every 3 months no matter the mileage. Problem is it leaks oil, and at times I've added 2 or 3 quarts. Thankfully it's rarely driven over 10mph so it didn't wipe out the bottom end, and it still has good oil pressure. But I have a couple collapsed lifters and I'm sure a few worn rockers. So I figure if I'm going to do the work why not go a little farther and swap the cam, lifters, and now possibly rockers. I'm not looking for a screamer but just some more power would be nice. I daily drive a Lincoln Mark VIII now and I'm kind of spoiled....
