I will have a look at those. I'm a bit out of my element on these smaller setups. The 2.5/2" Titanium valves on my Boss 429 are 285lbs. CLOSED-950 OPEN at 2.1 installed, so I'm all ears. I got the EDM lifters with and am entertaining the thought of Teflon coating the cam as well just to help not damage the cam. I don't want to over spring it either.High Zinc oils too.

Mechanical roller cams require much more spring than a solid flat tappet cam because of the high ramp rate of the roller cam.
One of our BBC roller cams is 300 lbs closed and 800 lbs at .700” lift.

The Comp 7228 conical spring will give you around 400 lbs open at .600” lift which should keep the lifter tracking at 7500 rpm.

Rather than Teflon coating the cam have both the cam and the lifter face micro polished.
You will not need to do break-in.

Those are good numbers on the Comp springs.

So far, I've not been able to find someone in Western Canada that can do micro polishing.

I do have access to someone that does this.

The process is called Centrifugal ISO Finishing. The company that I'm talking to is in Washington State. That's a file picture that he sent me , I wish it was my crank. I'm guessing it's a Toyota crank. From his info the process is not for the faint of pocketbook! There are YouTube videos.

Putting the finishing touches on the 400 V8 puller getting ready for our first pull next weekend. We will be competing against a 300-6 competitor that's been running fora couple years that really has his combo dialled in. Here is a shot of him from last weeks show where he came in 4th out of 16 units.

It is a lot of fun, and like any kind of racing, a LOT of work.

This is what 9 hours of tire grinding looks like, one more to go. This is also only about half of what needs to be done, we should take the lug height down from the original 1 3/4 to about 5/8".

That's a nice wheels up shot of the 300 inline 6 puller. Done a few of those tires for my antique modified AC pulling tractor. I ground them down to 3/4" on leading edge and around 1/2" on the back side. Our pulling group called for regular tractor tires, no aftermarket pulling tires.That is one time consuming job, but it's part of the sport.
looking forward to seeing some pictures of the 400 V8 puller that you are going to run this year in memory of your buddy for his wife, very nice gesture and good pulling. I know he will be riding with you all the way.

Are you grinding the lugs down because they rip off at full height?

No I ground down my lugs to reduce the bite and intern this will increase wheel speed. Tractor pulling (really sled pulling) is all about wheel speed & having your added weight in the proper place. It is not a HP game but hookup game. I have seen lots of tractors win with less HP just because they had wheel speed & weight placement set up better. I am sure "Lunatic Fringe" can add much more on the subject.

So you reduce bite to get your Rpms up at the launch... getting you into the power band right from the get go. Is that the technique?

No chainsaw & fixture that I know owe yet, but a buddy of mine in Linden, WA used a hand held power hacksaw with an aggressive blade to get 85% of the lug off, then ground down the rest. One dirty, tiring, back killer job. :nod: :nod:

I pretty much agree with this. We're actually trying to grab as much surface area of the track as possible without digging down because then you're constantly trying to climb out of a hole. Engine and wheel speed are important, but Ground speed is what you're after.

We made a jig that squeezes the tire and has a top surface that holds a router to remove most of the lug and then a planer and a 7" grinder with a special disc to dress it.

There is a company called CM Pulling Tires that does this this. I seem to recall he has videos on his website showing the cutting.

LF -- It's all good, two different types of tractor pulling. Our antique tractor pulling club had a 5mph speed limit during the pull with a gauge on the sled to tell on you. You have to keep wheel speed up and control the bite, but don't go over 5 mph.

This was a big sport change after 35+ years of front motor dragster racing. My last car shown ran a best of 6.99 ET @ 198 mph. Picture is of my wife after a pass at Bakersfield, CA.

I forgot that some groups have a speed limit. Very nice dragster! A picture of the grinding disc we use.

We made our maiden run on Saturday, didn't do as well as we'd hoped, but we didn't break anything and learned a ton. I know none of the engine specs, never had the valve covers off, and same with tire pressure. We ran with 1.5 psi, but looking at the tire marks on the track we had guessed way too low which in turn dragged the motor down to 5000 rpm instead of 6500 where it should be.

That reminds me of the time one of my buds said he needed a piece of really aggressive "triple aught" sand paper.

Those chunks on the disc are carbide, they'll rip huge pieces out of just about anything. Went to another event last weekend with MUCH improved results. Came in 1st on Saturday and 2nd on Sunday out of 5 units. The changes we made were, raised the rear tire pressure from 1.5 to 4.5 psi and moved 20 lbs from the front of the tractor to the rear.

The 6 came in 2nd and 4th.
