Ford 240 Head Pictures

Post #1 by old28racer » Fri Mar 30, 2018 2:10 pm

Does anyone on this site have a picture of a 240 68cc kidney shape chamber and one of the 240 pushrod slots?

And if you need help determining if it's a 240 head.

The 240 head will have a large "A" cast in the head under the valve cover area of the head.

The 300 will have a large "T".

And the casting/engineering # will also have a "A" in it at the third digit instead of a "T" which all the 300 heads have. And there will also be a large "A" cast into the one corner on the bottom of the head next to the casting #.

Here's a pic of a carbed 300 head next to a 240 head to compare combustion chambers. The top head is the carbed 300 and the bottom a 1972 240.

Paul (pmuller9) & Ted (Fordman75)

Thanks for the great pictures & information. I have a friend that just picked up a complete 240 motor from a farm buddy. Motor was a runner when pulled to install a V8 in his truck. He has offered the head to me at no cost (ya the shipping will be steep, he will have it hot tanked, maged, pressure tested at his local auto machine shop to make sure it is OK before shipping) I will forward information & pictures to him so he can first pull the valve cover and make sure their is an "A" cast in the head to indicate it is a 240 head and not a 300 head with a "T" on a 240 block from a change while in service.

I never go off just one of the items. I always check them all to confirm it is what it's suppose to be. I like to use a small wire brush to clean off the area the casting # is in. And use a small mirror to check it before I pull a head . Then pull the valve cover and check for that "A". Then check the shape of the chambers once the head is pulled.

I agree with above. I found a 240 in a 74 e100. Valve cover even had a 240 emissions tag and the VIN had the 240 code. Once I pulled the head, it turned out to be a c8te 300 head.
