Removing harmonic balancer

Post #1 by rratselad » Wed Apr 04, 2018 4:18 pm

Hi All,

I'm trying to remove my harmonic balancer and not getting anywhere. I have a 240 and it's in a 70 econoline, so there isn't much room between the balancer and radiator. I cannot get an impact gun in there, but I can get a breaker bar.

The van is a standard and I put it in gear. The problem is that the crank rotates just enough that the breaker bar isn't effective, even with the van in gear and parking brake engaged.

I'm really hoping not to have to pull the whole front end off, including the radiator, so I can get an impact gun in there. Am I missing anything easier?

Thanks.

Try resting the end of the breaker bar on something solid and maybe securing the end in place so it can't go anywhere.
Then bump the starter

I used to make a flywheel stop for Ford's that bolted down low on the bellhousing where the inspection plate is to simplify balancer bolt removal. There may be others on the market if you did a search.

Is the threading on the bolt that holds the balancer on standard? (e.g. righty tighty, lefty loosey)

If its a manual put it in high gear. If its like the 300 you'll need the puller with 3 outside bolts, be sure those 3 bolts are in fully or you risk stripping it, believe me. I think I have been able to get the balancer off with the radiator on but it was close, and it was an 85 f150 so not the same vehicle.
