Points distributors?
Does anyone know what points distributors will drop in the 300 and run with just a hot wire and a coil. Just in case something in this crazy world happens it would still be able to run.

Re: Points distributors?
You didn't mention what year truck your working on, but assuming it's carb engine from a 1965 to roughly 1984 (or up to 1986 if converted from electronic controlled carb and Distribitor). Then look for a 1968 to 74 point type distribtor from a 240 or 300 six they are the best of the point Distribitors. Good luck in the hunt

Re: Points distributors?
Do you know where one can find a new (not rebuilt) 68-74 points distributor for a 300 motor in a 1971 F250?
If rebuilt is the only way to find one now a days, who has the best one?

Re: Points distributors?
You are correct it is a 84 carb converted to non computer. Now the question is will the points distributor have enough umph to be able to spark enough for a 4 barrel setup that I have installed?

Use the points distributor with an MSD 6A ignition system.
The points contacts will last for a long.
It is on sale for the holidays.

Re: Points distributors?
I am trying to take any electronics out of the system. So could I just run really hot coil?

Yes you can but the hotter coil will decrease the life of the points contact. The pitted points get ugly.
You can set the MSD box up so if it dies you can quicly disconnect it from the ignition coil and connect the points and power with a ballast resistor to the coil.
The coil can have short leads with a weather pack connector.
There would be two other mating weather pack connectors, one for the MSD system and the other for the points system.
You can plug the coil into either system roadside.

Re: Points distributors?
What is the OP worried about? A giant EMD pulse that takes out all electronics?
The idea of daily driving points ignition is a bad one.
If worried, buy a points distributor and leave it in the truck.
You will need a ballast resistor for most OEM coils that were for points ignition.

Re: Points distributors?
A points type distributor is a great trigger for an MSD box. It's working well in my old Pontiac 455SD. Points last a very long time.

My 85 300 was running on one with a pertronix kit in it. Plenty of spark to 5000 rpm.

Use a distributor as recommended above, and buy a new coil for a Volkswagen air-cooled bug, it does not require any ballast resistor.
A well-maintained breaker point ignition is very reliable.

The MSD 6A box is great! There is another way that is low budget to up grade a point type distribtor for higher output, by using the points to trigger one of the old MoPar electronic ignistion boxes. Your points and condenser will last almost forever as the electrical load is greatly reduced, with the points being used just as a simple switch. In the unlikely case of the electronic control box failure it's a simple mater of swapping the wiring back and regapping so the points can take contol again.
I won't go into all the details of the install other that to say it's very easy and all that info on how to do it are already at (http://www.gofastforless.com). This system can work on about any point type ignistion system, I put this system on my 1956 F350 car transporter in about 1976 (it had a 1965 Olds 425 and Turbo 400 trans). The NAPA chrome control box is what I used it looks just like the one in the picture of the go fast for less electronic ignistion how to. Never had any problems with it and that orginal control box was still on the truck as of 2014 when I lost track of it. The chrome and orange boxes were used on the Dodge and Plymouth Hi Performace engines, just ask for a 1975 ignistion box. Good luck

I have a 1971 F250 with a stock 300" 4.9L motor. Ignition is a stock P&C distributor with the "pink" resistance wire hooked up. I am going to run a Protronix Flamethrower 3 ohm coil.
Can I install a low cost Mopar orange electronic box into this system?
Is there a better Mopar box for dwell control (motor is 5500 max RPM)

Yes it should work with a Flamethrower coil. The orange or chrome box will work good I don't know of any better one for your combo. Good luck

I believe this is the important detail of the original post, which is to create the simplest possible ignition, hence my suggestion of a breaker point distributor with a VW coil. Yes, the VW coil will work just fine with a Ford engine.
All of the suggestions about triggering an electronic ignition are very good ideas, but they do not solve the original poster's goal.
Any engineering endeavor is a compromise.

Yes, it will run just fine. Don't be scared off by all of the naysayers who don't think it will.
You will need to do the due diligence of much more frequent maintenance.

I respectfully disagree. I have driven roughly one million miles on breaker point ignitions. I also still do farm work with horses

I've owned points ignition trucks and owned horses. Both require a lot of maintenance and both smell bad from the tailpipe.

Does a magneto improve the smell emanating from the tailpipe...?
