Finishing touches fresh build.

Post #1 by joejoe223 » Sun Jul 28, 2019 4:40 am

Hey all.
First, thanks for all the info from this site. I have learned a ton.
I am just finishing a build on a 300 for my 85 f150. It’s a daily driver/work truck on my small homestead.
The build is pretty basic I think. 10 over bore. Crank ground and over size bearings. Cam upgraded for torque but mild and should idle smooth. Offenhauser intake/carb kit with headers. Only thing I’m not sure on is ignition. I have read a lot of posts about it. But nothin has really stood out. I’m currently thinkin keep the ds2 and add the msd coil. Is this my best option or should I look for hei?? Or something else entirely??
Thanks in advance.
Joe joe.

The simplicity and cost of the DSII is nice. If the distributor and the rest of the system is good it should provide a very reliable set up.

Can you give us more details about your build?
Which pistons did you use?
Which cam?
Carburetor?

Thanks

I didn’t do the build myself. So the finer points I’m not sure on. But it’s basically stock rotating assembly. Just over bore. All he really said on the cam is it will give me more low end and still give me a smooth idle. The carb is the holly 390 that came with the offy intake. I’m not trying to make a high performance motor. Just something to drive and pull a little now and then. (Pulling sub 1ton) current plan is stock distributor but upgrade coil. Is that a decent plan?

Also with the headers, heat wrapped, but is it better to put a y pipe and run single 2.5 into muffler? Or keep it dual all the way. Sound isn’t a big deal to me as long as it isn’t load as doggie doo or tin can sounding.
Thanks guys

The MSD Blaster coil is a good upgrade.
The only consideration is that the coil needs to be mounted upright so you will need to change the coil bracket.

I would also recommend adding an MSD 6A ignition box to the DS2 system.

A "Y" pipe after the header will help with scavenging and improve torque.
