I'm certainly not an expert on them, but for a 4r70w, Silver Fox Transmission seems to be very knowledgeable and Performance Automatic has a decent reputation as well. Monster is well known and you can find bad reviews on pretty much any company, so don't just take my word as gospel. Even Baumann has a lot of info on both transmissions and good controllers.

Found some time to break down this motor. It looks trashed to me. The head may be salvageable? At the very least it could be used for tests.

Yes it looks like a regular cast crank to me, did you happen to find the casting / design numbers on it yet?

No markings. From what I could see. I didn’t pull it out though. If it was in question I would.
