new 4.9 owner!

Post #1 by rogersbw » Mon Jan 13, 2020 2:52 pm

glad i found this page, seems to have a ton of info on it and ill be looking forward to reading most if not all of it.

just picked up a 76 f100 ranger with a 4.9 in it...bit of a project as I have an unhealthy relationship with rusty old fords.

came here looking for some help identifying parts and such for regular and preventative matinenance. It starts and runs great, but its incredibly rich even at idle. I wanted to do the usual cap/rotor/plugs/wires and likely just clean out or rebuild the yfa on it...but it appears someone has put on a different distributor vs the one that "the book" says should have come from the factory.

its significantly wider/shorter than the factory cap, same for the plugs/boots (or at least compared to what the book says should have come on it). isnt an hei style, so i was curious if it was common to put a different style one on from a newer model year?

rest of it is just bodywork and rust repair, hope to restore it to the original light blue/white...as it is identical to the old ford i learned to drive on from my grandfather at his farm some 30 years ago!

thanks again for making this resource available!

figured id add a pic of truck

Welcome to the Ford Six forums rogersbw, sounds like you have the later DuraSpark II (1977 up) Distribitor cap, rotor, and plug wires installed. These later parts are better than the 1976 DuraSpark I parts but if you wanted to you can also go back to those earlier parts as they will fit too. Good luck on your F100 Ranger
A bad day Drag Racing is still better than a good day at work!

I am still hunting for a project car to build but with my current low budget it's not looking so good. My Ex- Fleet of Sixes these are all long gone! :bang: 1954 Customline 223 3 speed with O/D, 1963 Fairlane project drag car with BB6, 1977 Maverick 250 with C4, 1994 F-150 a 300 with 5 speed.

called it on the 77+ cap and wires! exact match!

(bought the coil too just to be safe...although it was only a generic "hecho in china-o" part.
