Urgent help required: WC34 Nissan Stagea 4WD is stranded

Post #1 by xctasy » Wed Feb 10, 2016 4:08 am

I'm doing 65 hour weeks night shift, and don't want to tilt lift or tow my car. And since my son is away, I don't have my multimeter to check the car, and I cancelled my triple A Roadside assist...

My WC34 Nissan Stagea 4WD is stuck at the resthome, my wife is uber hacked off with me, (and its happened to me in both the two 1996 RAV4's I've owned, the 83 CFI Toyota Corona, the 82 Corona, but not my Falcon 4.1 or 3.3 Mustang or 4.0 Explorer).

Its a 1996 EFI 2.5 liter Variable Valve twin cam car with a kind of coil over plug edis ignition and four wheel drive.

It just cranks over.

I went in and checked the relays and fuses. Looks okay.

It's not OBDII, it has a checklight (which is not showing any problems), but its the earlier brain dead 40 pin Hitachi computer so I can't pull any SAE fault codes from it as it doesn't have an OBD port. Sice its not triggered a Check Engine light, I'm guessing its got fuel pressure, but maybee not spark or perhaps timing belt failure. Unlike my old Fords, I can't crank it from the engine bay, so there is no way I can self diagnose.

Couldn't check for spark and cam movement. My wife and I will go together tomorrow to check for the first six seconds of cranking to see if the fuel pump works.

So I have to check/ re-check
1. All relays
2. AllFuses
3. the fuel pump
4. Its earthing
5. Variable Valve Timing Cam actuator
6. Timing Belt
7. Crank position sensor
8. Air Fuel Meter
9. TPS
10. Spark to spark plugs.
11. There are some other sensors as well (The EDIS style Ignition control box is a common fault on these, often they just put an Explorer or Falcon EDIS 6 in it).

My wife drove to work at the rest home, and it wouldn't restart this morning.

Other people have had the same thing, but they don't list what to check asside from relays and fuses. fuel pump earth. It has an imobliser, but its not that. Checked it, and its okay.

Other peoples 1995-1996 Nissan experiences...

Towed to the garage for repair. No fuel pressure or pumping.

Towage fee 95 dollars.
New fuel pump 93 dollars.
Labor 105.
293 happy dollars later, and my wife is driving it again.

Happy wife, less trouble and strife.

And there is modern motoring. You need techncians to help you when modern tech goes bad. I did 15 mnutes diagnostic checking, then instantly found no pumping from the fuel pump.

In my Mustang when its fuel pump went, it was external. I just grabbed the fuel pump from my 1984 Australian Falcon, and a 10 dollar brass union, I was good to go.

And that's why I love my '67. I couldn't get my Mountaineer to start one morning after my wife had left with the van already. Turns out the battery was dead. Stereo was playing games and drained the thing (it randomly shuffles the CD changer even when the vehicle isn't on....). The Mustang had been packed away for the winter and had been sitting for 2 months. Luckily, no snow on the ground so I got to spend the day with the old girl. Took a few tries to get her started only because the fuel bowl was dry (think I have a bad check valve in the pump), but soon as I got some liquid dinosaur up to the carb she fired right up and off we went!
