MSD ingition box failure

Post #1 by tom954x4 » Mon Apr 18, 2016 9:56 am

So I am 175 miles from home in the middle of nowhere, pulled over at a wildlife refuge to take a break and enjoy the view, and then my truck would not start. I'm en route to an event in Oregon I paid significant dough to attend, 130 miles further away, and have to be there in 4 hours. No cell service. No towns no nothing nearby except birds, elk and black bears, none of which are going to help me out.

I recalled in the back of my mind somewhere that the MSD ignition controllers were subject to random failure without any warning and figured that that had to be it. So I bypassed the controller by replugging the plugs leading to the coil as per the pre-MSD installation and the truck fired immediately on the next start attempt.

disaster averted.

When I get home the MSD POS is going in the garbage. I had it maybe 5 years and 10,000 miles tops on it. A word to the wise to other members with this device under the hood.
By the way, on the rest of the trip I really could not notice its absence and it certainly had no effect on gas mileage.

Mine failed one time and I moved the primary power wire from where it was (years ago) to a few inches (centimeters) away and it fired up. Dunno.
