Getting started on FI.

Gotta plumb a return line and the higher PSI pump.

Really like how clean the hard lines turned out. Pretty good hand bend job.

Image

Had to weld on to my line clips to take the additional 3/8 hard line.

Final fuel line config. Using the push on style hose. Boy, that stuff is nice.

Accell cable. Had to cobble together that black cable stop.

Getting some of the electrical sorted. Boy it really helped taking out that vent to get at the back of the driver's dash area.

Thanks! I tried starting it today and have an issue with the RPM/crank sensor. All the others look good. I am using Megasquirt and it has an awesome graphic interface. You can see all the gauges for the different sensors. Hope to get it running soon!

I got it to fire and run. At this point, I have it as a "fuel only" set up. I think I am going to go ahead and have my DUI disty modified so I can do computer control.

Good news to hear! Fuel injection+computer controlled ignition... I don't think there is much left you can do on that Bronco. It should run and drive really well and also should add power.

I tend to agree with you, but maybe we are being short sighted. This Megasquirt says it can control NOS, turbos, launch control and E85 fuel. Hmmm......

Megasquirt... is there anything it can't do?
So is it running good and was it worth it?

Short version: It has run, but not done.

I got it to run as a fuel only set up and decided I should jump straight to it controlling the ignition/timing. With that, I sent my distributor back to DUI to have them do the change to the GM 7 pin set up. It was pretty inexpensive to have them do it and I know they would do it right. So, I was waiting on that for a bit. Just realized that I need a jumper kit for my main mother board to do the GM HEI stuff. I ordered that too.

So, it may be a couple weeks before I am live and running.

So far, I am impressed with Megasquirt. It isn't a "plug and play". As with things that are designed to do everything, you have some extra effort to get it to work for your specific application.

I am hoping to use Shadow Dash after I get it running. I have an older tablet that I can use to keep the shadow dash in the Bronco.

How do you like the headers? How hot does it get under the hood?

My vote is still out. Part of why I went megasquirt was heat. I was running lean in my previous carb set up and that was a big part of it. I am guessing the headers were some factor as well. With this motor, there aren't many good options. The factory exhaust manifold is small, so it seemed like a header was the way to go.

I think it will be good with the fuel injection. My issue was the Weber carb. That carb is not designed to run "sideways" like it does with the adapter plate everyone uses on our motor. The float bowls on Weber 38/38 or 32/36 are designed to be pointed toward the front of the motor. I was having lean issues during acceleration due to fuel slosh with the bowl mounted the wrong direction. Also, my motor mounts kept the carb at a tilt that added to the issue.

The Weber 38/38 is a great carb, but it shouldn't be mounted with the bowl on the side.

Keep us posted. I've got my motor on the floor and I've get my head at the machine shop right now, get the divider put in just in case I decide to go wrking headers later. had an 88 with a 351 awhile back, and the gains were immediately clear when I added headers to it.

Gotta do some final under the hood shots. I really like the Megasquirt system. It took some time and education to get it right. I am still tuning, but it runs really nice.

Yes! Quite a lot!!! The Weber done with an adapter plate is not ideal. That carb was designed to run with the float bowls facing the front of the vehicle, not the side (on Aussie 2V heads, it does face the front and I am sure is fine).

With that carb, during acceleration, I was starving the front jet. So, the front of my motor was lean and the back was rich. With my Weber, I never saw full potential of the motor. Now, I don't have a float bowl issue. That alone gave me more power. Annd the FI does seem to have added some kick overall.

It feels awesome! It has great roll on power. I don't need to downshift to accelerate. The entire power band seems to have increased. This was a night and day change for me.

That is good news, more low end torque and power overall. And all the good stuff associated with fuel injection like cold starts etc. Nice results.

Thanks! Not sure yet. I have only driven a few hundred miles since getting it going. Also, I have been tuning it out. The initial tune was rich and I've been leaning it out slowly. That said, it's gotta give me better mileage. My tune under the carb was rich due to the issues I was having with it leaning out under usage. It's clearly gonna go up.

I need to get the tune finer before I really look for mileage.

Thanks!!! I've done EFI swaps before and went into this thinking it would be easy. It got a little difficult when I was trying to get the timing/distributor control working. I ended up dropping that feature and it's a "fuel only" set up.

A couple interesting things:
I am controlling the fan via the computer. So, if I want to change the temperature that the fan switches on, it's just a quick change in the computer. The current tune has a feature/issue. It does an awesome burble during deceleration. But, it also sometimes does more than a burble and full on pops a big back fire. I want to tune out the back fires, but keep the burbles. So, I am fine tuning until I figure it out.

Overall, the more power is great. I put a pretty big cam in it and it wasn't the greatest with the carb. The FI does much better with my big cam. It seem to adjust to it well on the fly.
