Yet another transmission question

Post #1 by 66BroncoDD » Mon Mar 03, 2014 10:03 am

I see a pattern developing here :) .

The NV3550 can be done, I see. But it is also a relatively expensive conversion ($900 in adapters alone, and then I have to find the actual transmission). So I got to reading and this toploader (T&C) 4 speed with OD catches my attention. There's PLENTY on how to do the swap to a Bronco with an 8 banger, but as usual the sixes get no love. Ideally what I would like to do is the transmission swap now while I have the frame off (or rather soon to be off) and just stick with my stock 170 until I can build a mean 200. Is that feasible? Does anybody have this transmission, and what was your donor?

The T&C top loader (RUG) will fit both sixes and V8's they were used in 1977 & 8 (cast iron looks like a top loader 4 speed but only has four mounting bolts and a bulge on right side of case ) Granada's, Monarchs, Fairmonts, 79 to 83 (alum. case srod) Mustangs etc. there is also the truck version top shifter version (3 speed overdrive bigger bearings used in both 2x4 and 4x4 pickups which you may be able to adapt much easier to your Bronco Check with Advanced Adapters), I don't rember the years think early 1980's to mid 80's. good luck in the hunt

A bad day Drag Racing is still better than a good day at work!

I am still hunting for a project car to build but with my current low budget it's not looking so good. My Ex- Fleet of Sixes these are all long gone! :bang: 1954 Customline 223 3 speed with O/D, 1963 Fairlane project drag car with BB6, 1977 Maverick 250 with C4, 1994 F-150 a 300 with 5 speed.

I'm sorry I just notice this post. I used a mid 80's OD "toploader" it's actually a t-170 RTS which has the shifter tower coming out if the top of the case. I used the 4x4 version which has a 31 spline output and had it cut and resplined to 28. I had it cut to the same length as the original 3 speed and used the 6 cylinder intermediate housing.
