I just picked up a clean '65 van (170/3-speed) in NM. I was told it ran up until '05 when the starter was replaced. Shortly after the starter was replaced I was told the ring on the flywheel went bad. After I got it home, I pulled the trans and bellhousing expecting to replace the flywheel. Turns out the starter drive was broken on the NAPA starter. There was an area on the starter that had been rubbing on the flywheel as well. I thought maybe they had installed the wrong starter. I picked up a new starter at O'Reilly's and did some grinding where it was going to rub and the van fired right up. Ran like a top... The new starter only lasted about a week though. I suspect the drive is broken again, so I'm asking for help. Has anyone seen this? Am I using the wrong starter?
