1/2 ton means it can safely carry 1,000 lbs of cargo continually and up to 2,000 lbs occasionally if the tires, brakes and springs are good. It probably weighs 3,800-4,200 lbs empty.
1 "76" F150 RC, LB, 2WD, 300, NP435, 9" open 3.00, special order 2-76/Delivered 4-76. Still "new".

1 "73-79" F150 RC/SS/SB/4WD, "84"-300, T18, NP205, 9" open 3.50, Dana 44 3.50 open, Offy DP, Holley 470, EFI + single 2.5" exhaust. Gathered from 15+ donor/parts trucks. "Fubar". Runs good, safe, still needs details/project continues.

An E150 cargo should have an Allowable Weight or Payload (GVWR - Curb Weight) of 1,965 lbs in the heaviest SuperVan to 2,565 in the lightest short wheelbase model. An E100 (discontinued after 1983) would have had an Allowable Weight of about 1,260-1,795 lbs.

Half-Ton, Three-Quarter-Ton, etc are OLD nomenclature that's just been carried on out of tradition. F150's today are called half-ton trucks but have payloads of upto 2,200 lbs!

It's often suggested the names came from the front axle of trucks, not their payload capacity. Ford all the way back to Model TT trucks used front axle ratings. The TT was a "one ton" truck because it could carry one "short" ton (.91t) total and when the A trucks came out this increased further but an A truck with a TT axle was a one ton, the next step up was a 1.5 ton, and so on. There were only so many axles, engines, etc available in those days but every GVW class had a unique front end and above TT they shared a DRW, worm drive rear-ends, so the physical difference in GVW was the front axle.

Names changed and instead of using short tons, full tons were used so the smallest pickup was now half-ton. Names stick I guess.
